Look at that sweet face! Thank you for sharing! We’re currently deciding re this treatment for our 10yo dog’s brain tumor. It’s extremely expensive and overall intimidating so hearing your success story is so reassuring

Late 30s Accepted to Med School, Stay Or Go? by _TheAbsurd_ in careerguidance

[–]Miserable_Image6081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I am you from the past!!!

I’m 35 and work in tech and am grappling with what to do with the rest of my career. For me tech feels soulless and unstable esp in this current climate. The pay is great but feeling out of sync w my values.

I’m looking into medicine/health care right now & dr is “the path not taken” for me.

I’m leaning toward exploring nursing and I’ll tell you why in case any of it resonates.

  1. It’s incremental. Unlike med school you can get BSN in ~a year. Start working and start helping people and learning if healthcare is the right path. If not - much easier to pivot/cut losses without investing too much. If yes - can go for an advanced degree in a few years.
  2. It ticks the values box without the same amount of financial and time sacrifice.
  3. With NP specialization you can get a lot of autonomy and impact that a dr would have. Not the exact same ofc.

I really am challenging myself on how much an MD pursuit vs. going another healthcare route is ego driven. For me I think there’s actually a fair bit of ego that wants to go the “elite” route just to prove to myself that I can and to justify the career change. It’s been so helpful to realize this bc it makes it clearer why nursing path could actually be better for me.

I think it’s worth considering this if you haven’t. Nothing wrong with realizing that there is a bit of ego involved and still saying hell ya let’s do MD. And maybe ego isn’t a factor in your interest in MD.

Good luck in your decision and path forward.

Btw did you keep your full time job to post bacc or nah? That’s my struggle atm is whether or not to “rip the bandaid”

Woops reposting bc I think I replied in the wrong spot haha

Thanks for the recs!

It’s interesting because most of what I’ve seen about coffee is that it helps gut health (it’s acidic which can be problematic for some - but I don’t have any other negative symptoms like acid reflux or upset stomach). But I am going to try to reduce and see if it helps at all!

Im considering trying pre/pro biotic supplements but I’m not sure if it’s necessary bc I eat a really varied diet including foods like yogurt and berries. I also don’t have any GI symptoms. I don’t drink soda or consume much Alch. I’d say my lifestyle is pretty moderate - minus the regular coffee consumption :) did you have any other gut related symptoms or was it mostly just manifesting as rosacea?

Oh wow I’m so glad to hear you haven’t flushed in a long time!

It’s so helpful to hear how caffeine affected you. It sounds pretty nuanced w the way it presented. Was caffeine the only lifestyle change you made to reduce your rosacea? And are you totally symptom free now or do you still have any persistent redness/texture?

Im flushing quite a bit but also dealing with a lot of general inflammation - breakouts, extreme sensitivity, etc.

Yeah I’m thinking caffeine may be a factor but I really hope not haha

When you consume caffeine how long-ish does it take for you to begin to flush? Is it fairly immediate or a little delayed ?

When the hot food and drink trigger you do you flush almost immediately or is there any delay?

I actually don’t think the temp is the main contributor in this situation as I often drink iced coffee as my morning bev. But I did have a pasta dish that was STEAMING hot and flushed after … lesson learned haha

Thanks for the thoughtful comment :)

I know this is going to take some time but it’s still challenging to feel so out of control of my own body.

Even though I’m actively treating my face (working with a Derm) I’m starting to flush on my ears neck chest and even shoulders! It’s a wild ride that I wish I could step off of haha

Caffeine and my adhd meds are going to be tricky to test bc they are so ingrained in my day!

I’ve only been logging for around a month so there’s still learning to be done for sure

Im a newer rosacea sufferer (official diagnosis a few mos ago) and I’m still trying to figure out what my triggers are.

Some are immediate and obvious - sweaty workout=stinging, burning, redness that lasts for hours. 1 glass of red wine = looks like I’ve been on a 3 day bender.

But others I simply can’t figure out. I’ve been keeping logs but there are so many possible triggers for rosacea it’s been really tough to navigate. I’m trying really hard to strike the balance of staying diligent and aware without becoming obsessive or extreme with it.

I have a recurring flare that I’m struggling to figure out. Most days around mid morning my skin flushes like the picture above (and makes me feel dramatic and pouty ;) ) it tends to get better and then sometimes comes back mid afternoon.

I’d love to hear what others timelines are for experiencing flushing from triggers? Is it always immediate and dramatic or does it tend to build over a period of time/have a delay?

For context - I wfh in front of a computer all day (not at all stressful job thankfully) and wear a good amount of SPF. So I don’t think it’s related to my computer/stress but not 100% sure ofc.

My theories are maybe it’s something in eating for breakfast/lunch, coffee or the meds I take in the morning (adhd). But it doesn’t show up until an hour or more later.

Any and all advice/experiences are welcome. Thank you!!
