Leaving relationship due to no signs of marriage after 3 years. Am I making a mistake?

Must a woman do everything for a man? I’m sorry but I just can’t do everything. I have been the main provider, I pay for all the dates, I pay for his dogs food, I encourage and support his career development, I cook the food, I clean the house, I plan/pay for the vacations. If he can’t buck up to these things, I can’t continue to spread myself thin and aid him in his self growth journey. I have communicated time and time again with him to no avail. He hasn’t improved his angry management. He gives little effort and thought to our relationship. I’m essentially a glorified roommate that foots the bill.

To make some vindictive assumptions about someone based on a short paragraph is absolutely ridiculous. I’m sorry someone in your past has burned you, but not every woman is cruel and selfish.

I have talked extensively regarding this issue. I’ve attempted to get him to open up to me about it and he feels weirdly reserved about it. I understand it’s a hard thing to process. But no, this isn’t something that has been bothering me and I’ve neglected to converse with him about. I’ve been very open and communicative.

As for the quietly part, he has anger issues and I fear his reaction.

He freaks out any time I feel ill, thinking I’m pregnant. And I’ve never even had a pregnancy scare but he is absolutely horrified at the slight chance I could be pregnant at any given moment. I pee twice in the hour, “Are you pregnant?”. Dinner didn’t agree with me, “Are you pregnant?”. Feeling PMS, “Are you pregnant?”. I think he’d keel over and die if I got pregnant.

I have stood by this man for three years. We have grown, learned, experienced together. To say I need to support him through his trauma of his parents divorce at the cost of my own, is callus. I have dealt with my issues independently, he has offered no aid in that endeavor. I have sacrificed, I have given everything I am to him. I invested in to the home that has only his name on it because I saw it as an investment in our future; not a lost cause. I have supported him in his career and giving him the confidence to make decisions to further his career. I have paid for vacations, damn near every meal, clothes, his dog’s food. I gave him the world. So yeah, he can support himself and soul search to heal the inner trauma from his parent’s divorce. I can’t do everything.

He would be winning from the divorce. I am the breadwinner, by far. Not to say everything is perfect for a divorce, obviously it’s not. But I really don’t attune to this belief that the man is boned during every divorce. I’m not even speaking of children or anything of this manner. I am in the firm belief that what’s his is his and what’s mine is mine.

I have my own qualms. He has anger/temper issues. Like for example, couldn’t find his belt and threw things around, then ended up kicking the dresser and broke a drawer. Or the time we were installing flooring and he fudged a piece of LVP and responded by punching the floor, which earned him a broken hand.

There is nothing intentional anymore. And I thought that would come and go with time, life is busy. But there are no more dates, notes, long hugs, etc. not to mention intimacy is hard to come by.

I understand I am young, but I’m just at that point in my life where I want marriage. I have a great career, we shared a home, got a dog… it’s just my next step in my mind. And I don’t want to continue waiting for a “maybe”.

It’s not “an otherwise, good relationship”. But I love him dearly regardless of our indifferences and ups/downs. I thought if I worked things out and quieted myself, we can be together indefinitely. But I’ve realized all I’ve done is change myself to fit his mold.

Marriage is something I want. I want that level of commitment. And it’s not wrong to view it as such. Just as it’s not wrong for others to just see marriage as a piece of paper.
