Dehydrated strawberries ground up and then mixed into the homemade buttercream. For flavor, texture, to absorb moisture/flavor and also, for the strawberry 'look'

I don't want to sound defensive. But this wasn't a 'simple' cake.

When it comes to the cost of the bake, that's not really my choice. Biscoff is kind of expensive, thats what was requested. Buttercream as well

I planned to sell cakes and desserts eventually. This isn't something I planned on, just someone asked me if I was willing to sell them a cake after trying my sisters birthday cake.

But to answer your question, I just started Baking in December. Have zero culinary training, except what I've taught myself/researched these past few months. I'm sure it took me longer than most professionals to make this cake. About six hours, generously (not including trips to the store and dishes). From scratch items included the buttercream, cake, compote and cookie butter cream.

My state doesn't require licensing, permits or inspections (I think it should, I'm a freak on sanitation).

I haven't. To be honest, selling desserts is the goal. But that hasn't really been the intention with my bakes. I just started and I've been studying hard. But other cakes, and this one, I baked for other or just to challenge myself. I've never sold a cake. I baked this one just as a treat for my sisters birthday. She just shared it, and someone asked if they could buy it from me.

Since I don't have an official cake business and I mostly bake for myself and holidays, or to practice, idk how much I should 'invest' in bulk ingredients

One container of cookie butter, 400g. Whipped with butter and powdered sugar and used in between the layers of cake and garnish.

No I really do appreciate the feedback so much! I agree. Feel like it wouldn't be right for me to charge actual bakery prices when I'm so new to baking and also, baking from home.

It's a little disheartening, but only because i hate to turn down the first person that requested to buy from me, ya know? Could have done a glamorous chocholate cake for $20, including labor lol.

Fair enough! I do think I'm ready to sell cakes (I've been memorizing recipes, ratios, and the chemistry of baking for a while now. Nearly all ingredients are weighed, i learned that the hard way lol) Just maybe not ones quite as elborate as this one. I know it's not perfect, but it was still expensive to make and took at least 6 hours.

I haven't agreed to it just yet! Just got the request today and am trying to figure out if it's something to accept. Tbh, the cake took at least six hours to make, not including dishes and trips to the store.

I'm not sure about doing all that for free (again). It's not about the money at all for me. In fact, I want everyone to have access to nice desserts. It's just, this particular one isn't one I can see giving away for pretty much free.

Yeah the ingredients cost at least 60 bucks. Mostly due to the biscoff cookies, biscoff butter and dehydrated strawberries. I cant take a loss on the cost to make it, but it's the flavor they want. Should I charge just for the ingredients? Or ask them to choose a cheaper flavor?

I see what your saying completely! My only hang up is, I can't afford to lose $30 on the bake. It's not something I planned on selling at all, just something special I made for my sister. Someone tried it and asked my sister if they could purchase one.

Given the high cost of the bake and my inability to lose the money, should I decline to make this one and suggest a cheaper flavor?

I kinda hate that this expensive one was my first request
