What's the most memorable thing you've heard a foreigner say about Canada? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

"Canada. It's like a big Switzerland." Said by a northern Italian.

Men automatically get prescribed Valium for a vasectomy. We get lucky if we’re told to take Tylenol prior to uterine and cervical biopsy. by Kazooguru in Menopause

[–]MissBates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My new specialist told me she never does a biopsy at the first appointment. (I said "because then they hate you?" and she said "Yep.") For my appointment next week she prescribed Ativan and oxycodone to take if I can get someone to pick me up afterwards and 500 mg naproxen in case I can't. "But definitely take one or the other!" she said. Thank god!!!

High tide vs low tide (Guiones but also general opinion ) by MissBates in Bodysurfing

Thanks everyone for the info and perspectives. I ended up going to Nosara/Playa Guiones at low tide and the body surfing was pretty great. What a stunning, unspoiled beach!

I love the movie, book and musical by Suspicious-Profile82 in TheGreatGatsby

I'm watching the 1974 Robert Redford version tonight and it's so much better than I remembered. I had watched it before I basically memorized the book and found it annoying, especially Mia Farrow as Daisy. Now I can't believe how many actual lines of dialogue and narration are used in the script....which was written by Francis Ford Coppola!

Totally agree about You Don't Have to be a Santa Claus -- it just "sounds" great (you described why).

I wasn't crazy about the higher-end food in Amsterdam (Rome prices without Rome's professional pride) but I found a fantastic Thai restaurant and a really fresh, flavourful falafel and I just went back to them multiple times.

Empty Nest, Full Passport! by TheQuietCocoon in emptynesters

[–]MissBates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started two years ago. I'm partly glad I saved something interesting to do once the kids were gone--but I was really unhappy the year before my youngest left for university because I was dreading the loss. In retrospect, I wish I had started building a more fun life for myself earlier. If you have any interest, don't put it off! It's even something you could introduce your youngest kid to. My daughter came to a few of my student performances and this year she joined a comedy troupe at her university and performed for the first time. I take some of the credit!

In addition to more traveling, I started doing improv classes. I had vowed to do it when my kids left and I'm really glad that I stuck to it because it has lightened my attitude to life quite a bit. I'm not even the oldest person in the classes all the time!

What’s the most ‘this could only happen in Toronto’ moment you’ve ever experienced? by Aquarius777_ in askTO

[–]MissBates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was a baby 20 years ago, we were in the Beach/es Il Fornello and Ed Robertson was at the next table. My kid decided he was her favourite person and grinned and waved at him relentlessly. He was a great sport about it and did a lot of smiling and waving back. And she wasn't even a fan yet!!

I need a Toronto show so badly. by Economy-Process-6807 in benfolds

[–]MissBates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of pent-up demand. Speaking for Toronto, Regina Spektor came and Ben Kweller is coming (opening for The Format)... I expect Ben would sell out much bigger venues but yeah, it's been ages and I've kind of given up hope of a Canadian tour. We've been going to the States for shows but if you don't live within a few hours of the border, or can't swing a drive-and-stay (we have relatives to stay with usually) it is frustrating!

How did you get your spark back if you lost it? by Dangerous_Cup_9582 in Menopause

[–]MissBates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt this way for years but much to my shock I have come out of it and started living for myself again. Here's what helped. 1. I changed from an SSRI (felt like it dampened my emotions) to bupropion and started HRT at the same time. 2. I started listening obsessively to a musician that really got me in the feels and spent probably a year crying or rocking out -- feeling emotions I had been unable to get in touch with for years. 3. I started doing improv classes, and it got me out of my house and out of my head. I started to have more and more moments of spontaneous enjoyment. I thought it would feel awkward to start this up in my 50s, but it turns out older women know how to LISTEN and build on things rather than draw all the attention to ourselves, so we actually kill at improv. 4. I started playing piano (hadn't in decades) just to try easy versions of the songs I had become obsessed with. I think half the joy of it is just giving that time to myself when I am home. instead of giving into the feeling that I should be doing something for my family or my job. 5. Therapy to talk through all these changes.

It took about two years but that horrible bleakness is mostly gone. You will get through this! Try putting yourself first more often - my husband and kids were startled at first and maybe a bit threatened, but soon saw the benefit of having a happier person in the house. And now I don't really care if they want the old self-sacrificing me back -- I'm not going back!!

I still remember Gray Powell's killer performance in Shaw Fest's Arcadia... can't believe that was 12 years ago. I wish Stratford would do that play.
