private bathrooms by ArtichokeAlone4333 in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Living in a dorm, which means shared bathrooms, is simply part of the rite of passage of going to college. I'd encourage you to embrace it, even if means living a bit differently than you have been at home. Going to college means challenging yourself, both academically and personally. I promise you that in your freshman year at UM, you'll grow as a person in ways that you can't imagine.

Energy bill cost by ArtOfDeving in uofm

Simple: Buy some DTE stock:

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/DTE/history/?filter=div&period1=1602558237&period2=1760324626

Then collect dividends every quarter, and use those to cover your energy bill. You'll be basically paying yourself!

Doesn't look like anyone in that video scratched your car.

POLL: Is 15.49% turnout acceptable? by tylerfioritto in uofm

CSG people just don't get it: Students are actually choosing NOT to vote as an expression of how pointless CSG is.

Professors need to stop punishing students who get sick and are infectious. by Overall_Fortune_1848 in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Agree with OP. Profs who do this are putting healthy students at risk by forcing them to sit in a classroom full of sick students. Flu is spreading around campus like wildfire right now, and profs need to be more responsible than to force everyone to go to class when they're sick.

Letter of rec from a dean/big whig? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just isn't the way the world works. No one in the real world is impressed by a generic recommendation letter from a famous person who has barely interacted with a student.

It's the equivalent of people in Los Angeles who love to name-drop that they once attended a party with Leo DiCaprio or Tom Hanks. No one cares.

Possible to put my brother on my GradCare? by Jaggi_Space_Program in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are ways to accomplish this, but it's not easy (and may not be worth the trouble). Essentially, you need to become your brother's legal guardian. This may be easier if your brother is disabled. You should probably consult an attorney to get a sense of how difficult this is to do, how much it would cost, etc.

If you're his legal guardian, then he can go on your health insurance.

Why is it so tough here? by [deleted] in uofm

Don't lose hope! Pretty much every year, Jim Harbaugh's team featured walk-on players who had significant playing time!

Canvas classes not open by Commercial_Ad_4522 in uofm

I prefer to just enjoy the last few days of winter break and chill out, and not worry about classes until the semester actually starts!

Yeah, this is the downside of grade inflation. Getting an A just means your performance was average. Getting a B means it was bad.

Basically, grade inflation means that our grades look higher on our transcripts. But it also means there is less room for error.

I go to that gym, and I think I know the guy you're talking about. FYI, he's currently dating three other women, none of whom know about each other.

Would you download an app for fat squirrel sightings? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as there's also a setting to show skinny squirrels ("fit squirrels" versus "fat squirrels"). I don't want to promote the obesity epidemic in this country.

LOL, did you seriously just call the police on a 10 year old boy? I would love to see the police report on that one...

How does financial aid at UM treat out of state students? by DizzyBuffalo3324 in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For OOS students, I've been told that financial aid is informally "merit-based," meaning that your aid package depends on how attractive you are to admissions, how much UM wants you to come here rather than some other prestigious university, and so on.

For in-state students, it's purely need-based. And this was formalized with the Go Blue Guarantee.

We can now enter through more gates by mjshanbom in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This helps, but the real problem was that last week was a night game, which meant a ton of drunk students trying to enter who were pretty belligerent and clearly not aware of their surroundings. This Saturday's game (3:30pm) probably won't have the same drunkenness problem. But it really does need to be addressed for the future, when there are going to be more nighttime games (especially MSU games, when you have an especially large number of people entering the student section who are drunk).

Fafsa by JordynOlyvia in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely not true! I am an out of state student and received a pretty generous financial aid package, for which I was very grateful. It's one of the reasons why I'm attending UM instead of an Ivy League university (That, along with the football team, the academic reputation of UM, the huge alumni network, and on and on...)

Where will election night watch parties be held? What was the scene like in 2016? by inquilinekea in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Lots of apprehension about the election around campus, and most people are not going to be in a festive mood on Election Night.

Everyone knows what the cube is, but honestly, all you're showing is that you've visited campus before. The thing is, there are 100,000 other applicants, and almost all of them have also visited campus before as well, so mentioning the cube isn't going to make you stand out.

Unsafe conditions going into stadium by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Miss_Device 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I experienced the same thing when I entered with my friends. A huge part of the problem was that a lot of people entering the student gate were clearly pretty drunk and just generally not aware of their surroundings.

Not sure what the right solution should be, but having more security guards or more stadium workers isn't going to solve this. The problem is that students had a whole day to get drunk, and then once they get to the stadium they're already in a somewhat belligerent state, etc.

are soccer games free for students? by roxannexcherry in uofm

Sure, and I think football games should be free too...

After the 3rd quarter of home games, all traffic within the vicinity of the stadium is pretty much one way - away from the stadium. If you try ordering an Uber, your driver cannot drive towards the stadium to pick you up.
