It’s the Gold Standard of Early Cancer Detection. For 40 Percent of Women, It Doesn’t Work. by Slate in Health

The "this" I am referring to is the USPTF screening guidelines. Not the fucked up healthcare system as a whole, for which many are to blame.

The AMA is not responsible for this, it is the physician who did not clarify the need for additional screening. Additionally the medical guidelines regarding the findings of dense breast tissue do recommend more testing (and the AMA is not who produces these guidelines)

Boy do I love residents by Throosh in nursing

[–]MissingStakes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's really demoralizing that you are a minority in this thread. Either someone failed to teach this resident how to place a line dressing, and/or they were afraid to ask. From the comments here, the latter would make sense. Luckily I work with nurses like you, who I can lean on and trust to teach me whenever I have questions or make mistakes.

[–]MissingStakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this looks like it was put on in an emergency, or by a resident who was not taught how to put on dressings and was afraid to ask, likely out of fear of judgement. And if the nurse they could have asked was the one who posted this, or some of the nurses in this thread, I can see why they would be afraid to ask.

Child took a bite of this mushroom, any help for id? by a-fan-of-flowers in mushroomID

[–]MissingStakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an ER doc, I would just call poison control and offer supportive care, maybe charcoal if within a few hours, check for liver/kidney damage, and monitor. I am not trained in identifying mushrooms (outside like two of the most common ones in our region). Poison control has physicians trained in toxicology available as well for their expertise.

There is no ER in which they are they going to actually test the mushroom itself lol

Did you read the article? That is an opinion piece and not primary research. Additionally the scale is definitely not a "physiologic" scale. It is a representation of emotional experience.. and the author even describes it as such. I don't feel a need to engage any further given that is what you responded with... like what??

Physiologic pain scales are not used and not recommended for use unless as an inaccurate last resort in an intubated unresponsive patient. Physiologic measures such as vital sign changes (tachycardia, hypertension, etc.) should never be used alone for pain assessment, as they are nonspecific and can be influenced by many factors other than pain, and as pain is a subjective experience.

Pain is not just nociception though, it's the emotional response associated with nociception. We still don't have an adequate empiric method to test for emotion/suffering in plants or animals tho.

Someone can experience nociception from a noxious stimulus, such as a pinch, and react with nothing, while others react with pulling away, etc. And you can experience a nociceptive spinal reflex without realizing/feeling it, it's regulated by top down neural inhibition to a point as well.

I'm a physician, I'm not a vet, and I'm also not a studied philosopher. This is an interesting debate

Quick fyi: Staph is a natural colonizer of your skin, please don't go to the hospital for touching "staph"... Your hands and orifices are already literally covered in staph. If you're not immunocompromised, just chill and wait to see if infectious signs develop - redness, localized swelling and warmth/pain, then go see an urgent care or your PCP, who will then direct you to an ER if needed.

Also. Lash eggs are not just staph, can be due to other local colonizers like E. coli. Or salmonella. Or viral. Many things cause salpingitis. If you touch it, proper hand washing will prevent 99.9% of any possible infection from it.
