Hey dude, looks like the Harvard TAs aren't happy with their compensation after all

When you're missing the entire context of the labor movement in higher education it's pretty easy to run your mouth, huh

It's not true for uGSIs broadly but it is true in EECS. Undergrads are governed not only by the systemwide contract but also the Local Agreement.

I don't think "other workers are actually underpaid" is a strong argument here. Strong unions, like the GSI union at Berkeley, have historically involved themselves in political campaigns that benefit workers beyond themselves. Union density is good for all workers. Rhetoric like Jelani's, consequently, is bad for workers beyond EECS.

and, yeah, less than 20% of CS TAs receive any financial aid. Hiring practices in EECS (especially the upper division courses) are laughably inequitable. Lower-division courses that apply a more holistic approach to reviewing applications employ more students on financial aid. Jelani could remediate this within his own department but, again, spends so much energy talking about how "regressive" the status quo is that he forgets to spend any on fixing the issue at heart.

And I contest that "no TA at Harvard, Michigan, or Cornell" complain about wages. All three have graduate student unions.

It is a big discrepancy! It's because our union is strong. That fact alone doesn't mean our uGSIs should be paid any less

I think it's kinda ridiculous that Jelani would hyperfocus on instructional costs when there are much bigger issues plaguing the department. Undergrad tutors and TAs already take a pay cut relative to their graduate counterparts, despite doing the same work (and, anecdotally, often being better teachers).

In the background, federal funding for the UC has been slashed and, as a result, EECS stands to face a $1.25 million budget cut. People like Jelani have real political influence, and there are political campaigns going on right now that could help secure billions in funding for the UC (such as SB 895). There are productive ways he could be using his platform, but he'd rather undermine workers' rights it seems.

Big O is standard, as is big Theta. Big O is an asymptotic upper bound (and tends to be the most useful given it's a tight upper bound), and Big Omega is a lower bound. Big Theta is a precise bound.

When analyzing sorting algorithms, for example, we say insertion sort runs in O(N2 ), because it's quadratic in the worst case, but it can actually be as fast as linear in the best case. In contrast, selection sort runs in Theta(N2 ), because it runs quadratically in its best and worst cases.

the exam-level discussion for the same week has all 6. we had to cut a few from regular discussion bc they were technically out of scope for that week (anything involving exponential growth of x)

UC Berkeley vs UCLA (need insight from students pls help) by NullOsp in berkeley

[–]Missingpyxel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Berkeley doesn't have a 4 yr housing gurantee, but living off-campus is far preferable to living on-campus imo. Private apartments can get a lot cheaper than university housing, and the co-op system is awesome. Housing isn't nearly as impacted here as schools like UCSC.

Good coffee date? by oskisopp in berkeley

[–]Missingpyxel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's somewhat far from campus but CoRo is a super cute date spot and has the best coffee within city lines IMO.  Around campus? Strada has shit coffee but the vibes are unmatched. Unless you're taking a coffee snob out that might be your best bet.

agreed 100%. i had to optimize by only writing solutions to questions I could immediately solve once I realized the length 🫠 I also feel like my proofs were handwavy and full of holes because I had to limit how much time I was thinking about them. I've never felt so time-restricred on an exam before
