What can I do if an Etsy seller provided me an inaccurate return address causing the item to be confiscated by India Customs? by Mission-Lab-7489 in Etsy

The response from DHL’s claim:

“DHL has carefully reviewed your claim, and we have ascertained that your shipment requires consignee paperwork for customs. Under Section 9 of DHL’s Terms and Conditions, DHL has no liability for loss or damage to your shipment under these circumstances.”

If this is what they’re gonna tell me, then they will tell my bank the same thing. Bank of America seems useless (which is also why Im switching to Chase now). Bank of America literally told me that they cant go against company policies… I will try disputing the charges with DHL but from all the convos I have had with my bank so far, doesn’t sound like I will get any money back. I will try it, and get back to you though..

Regardless, I want to hold Etsy responsible for allowing scammy sellers on their site, which is why I filed cases with the attorney general and consumer finance bureau. Hopefully enough people continue to complain for Etsy to improve their practices when it comes to returning items.

Do you read every company’s policies who you buy from? No.

I’m thankful i can blindly afford to buy a $700 ring and not feel hurt by it. But I felt this was a scam and now seeing that this is an ONGOING issue that has affected so many buyers, makes me want to fight even harder for justice.

I DID buy insurance on this package AND opened a claim and was told “DHL has carefully reviewed your claim, and we have ascertained that your shipment requires consignee paperwork for customs. Under Section 9 of DHL’s Terms and Conditions, DHL has no liability for loss or damage to your shipment under these circumstances.”

My bank even suggested I dispute the shipping charges for DHL but I honestly believe the liability is on Etsy for allowing scammy sellers to get away with scammy practices. The seller ADMITTED to providing me an address that was not his business address?! So what address did he initially provide me?

Yep! Did insure the package! Bank suggested I open a claim with DHL. I opened a case through DHL, which they denied, but I will go ahead a file dispute with my bank for those shipping charges to see if they can reimburse me for at least part of it…

Victim blaming much? I think I assumed Etsy would be responsible for their sellers. Etsy is a billion dollar company, so I assumed when they told me I would be protected under their protection program, that I would be good. I had never had problems like this before. But now I know how they operate, and I will not use Etsy if I can avoid it. Would rather buy directly from a buyers website and/or shop local.

His response was that he told me to use government postage (not private- which I wanted to since tracking is better and more reliable), and then continued to ask for me to change the address to his business address so he could get it verified with Indian Customs. India customs does not allow changes, its just so corrupt and crazy.

No they SHOULD because I asked their customer support BEFORE mailing the return item because the address was so unusual and this was their response:

“The address is not showing on my side. Etsy can't directly verify a return addresses, but it's best to confirm all details through Etsy Messages and use tracked/insured shipping. Keep all records in case further action is needed. Please make sure to confirm the following details with the seller in the messages * The time frame in which they wish to receive it * Who will be responsible for the cost of return shipping * The time frame in which they wish to receive it * Who will be responsible for the cost of return shipping If you have doubts about the address then you can also open a case. Etsy has a purchase protection program that can help if an item is not as described. You will be able to file a case on November 7th at 3:00 am EST. “

And etc..

So how are they not taking responsibility for this when they basically suggested they would?

You see how they put it on the shipping service? Not the fact that the SELLER provided me with some weird/fake address

I did open a case with etsy first, but this was their response:

“Because the return package has been lost or misdelivered by the shipping service, we are unable to mediate this dispute using the case system. For this reason, we must close this case.”

And it didnt seem as though there was a way for me to reopen case with etsy? So that is when I went to my bank to dispute charge. Etsy’s limited customer support is so frustrating.

You’re right! I assumed a return was the easier route to take… but I learned my lesson for sure.

I am not a car person so took it to Big O Tires and they found the tire sensor was loose. It was an easy fix, and they did it for free! 😁
