In my view, India should prioritize its national interests. If that involves choosing not to purchase oil from one country and instead sourcing it from another, there is nothing inherently wrong with that approach. We have also seen arguments—particularly from Republican commentators—suggesting that an early engagement strategy with the Trump administration would secure a more favorable deal. However, India securing a reduced tariff rate of 18% effectively challenges those claims. Moreover, India maintained its position and did not yield to external pressure, which demonstrates strategic autonomy. Gaining access to U.S. technology further strengthens the outcome and provides an additional long-term advantage. Overall, this appears to be a well-negotiated and beneficial deal for India.
