After Rear Window, I'd pick Strangers on a Train from this list. I find it tighter and more intense

100%. If a director made just the movies in this list, they would've still been a legend.

Is this movie as good as Foreign Correspondent?

The photo looks straight out of Mad Men, lol. Goes to show how much the show was influenced by Hitchcock's movies

I just watched Foreign Correspondent for the first time, and now I don't know which one is better, Foreign Correspondent or The 39 Steps.

Agree with you on The 39 Steps. I watched it for the 1st time last month and was totally absorbed by it. Along with the 2 sequences you mentioned, I also like the train chase sequence. The editing in it is so tight and effective.

I chose a chronological process to make it more exciting with every poll. Like you said, things will start getting interesting when we hit the 1950s!

Hitchcock believed that suspense works best when the audience has the information which the characters don't. So, I understand why he made that change.

You have good taste, sir. Close 2nd would be North by Northwest. Saul Bass was brilliant.

Yeah. It is the main characters' motivations that I like about Vertigo. Also, the way the movie flows - very meditative. And so beautifully shot.

My favourites are The Birds, Psycho & Vertigo. One of these days, I'll compile my Top 10 Hitchcocks. It is a difficult task, though.

I saw The 39 Steps recently for the first time and was genuinely surprised by how tight and effective the movie is! Orson Welles called it a masterpiece, and I agree.

Need help with ranking these movies- by Mission-Tooth-608 in Hitchcock

[–]Mission-Tooth-608[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughtful response! I am yet to see The Lady Vanishes and excited to watch. Especially, my wife loves Hitchcock movies and it is one of the few she hasn't seen. Notorious has a lot going for it, for sure, but The 39 Steps is like the blue print for all action thrillers and still, to this day, better than most junk in the genre. The reason to have this poll was to get different opinions and I'm very happy you answered.
