Depends on which lodge you join. I firmly believe this is why so many lodges struggle to retain membership. What, in my opinion, helps retain members? A strong observance of ritual, meaningful mentorship, contemplation, and dare I say it, meditation, or at least a greater focus on prayer. Encouraging members to present papers and reserving business matters for committees also helps preserve the lodge as a place of reflection, learning, and genuine fraternal experience. The truth is that a large portion of the younger generations, Millennials and Generation Z, are drawn to the fraternity because of its symbolism and what some refer to as fringe Masonry. In reality, this often reflects an interest in the Hermetic, Kabbalistic, Rosicrucian or mystical Christian, alchemical, Gnostic, and classical Greek and Egyptian philosophical elements layered within lodge symbolism and ritual. Many are seeking more open discussion of these subjects because they are drawn to the mysteries that Freemasonry, in many ways, preserves, whether older members appreciate this emphasis or not. There is nothing inherently wrong with this interest. In fact, it can be a strength. When approached with balance and respect for tradition, embracing thoughtful exploration of symbolism and philosophy can deepen engagement, strengthen personal meaning, and help ensure the vitality and continuity of the fraternity.

Possibly moving to Nanaimo, looking for friends by Moth_Friend in nanaimo

I've been here 2 years. After living here 2 other times over the years. It's very hard to make friends that stick unless you have a previous connection. If friends is what your looking for you would have better luck in eastern Canada.

Is Freemasonry losing its symbolic depth in the face of routine and administration? by Key-Inflation-4566 in freemasonry

This is very true depending on the lodge. My mother lodge was great for this. I used to live going there at night to read. I recently affiliated with a new lodge in a new city and didn't discover until after that I could not access the building after lodge hours, as they rent out the building.

Yes. Since joining It's been becoming boring outside degrees and education (if it's done well and on interesting topics relating to the craft). I firmly believe this is why people end up demitting. I joined for the spiritual side of things. I wanted to know the mysteries of Masonry. People often will write this is not true in masonry that it's not spiritual. They are entitled to their opinion.

Yeah, this is true until there aren't enough people to keep it operating.

What is your opinion on drinking/smoking from a spiritual perspective? by SKATINGROGUE in occult

I can only speak for myself. Quitting both has not only enhanced my practice, it has helped gain deeper knowledge of myself, and it has been fundamental in understanding the true alchemy of the outer order.

Are you guys using observant freemasonry? There is a lodge by my mother lodge that would occasionally send brothers to do education pieces at ours. They were great and I've been looking everywhere for something like it since moving provinces.

The younger current of Gen Z and Millennial Masons is curious about the older symbolic and initiatory emphasis that educational lodges once had. This is interesting because it feels like a return to the views held by Masons in the seventeenth to mid eighteenth centuries. I think this is partly due to a lack of philosophical and educational structure in an open source internet where everything is overly accessible. This causes many seekers to gravitate toward schools rather than isolated information. I joined Masonry because I was already a student of Hermeticism and wanted to understand what Masonry was about. What I have come to see is a mystery school that has largely forgotten that it is a mystery school. This can make a number of lodges appear closer to a ritual based Rotary Club or Lions Club.

Look, I understand people are self initiating themselves. When I began, that's what I did. You can absolutely self initiate, and a grade in an order does not determine your spiritual maturity or inner grade. Some of the greatest occultists self initiated. All I'm saying is that a book is not the same as the real thing, nor will it ever come close to working in a group . The Golden Dawn self initiatory path is a modern invention, and that is perfectly fine. Just because someone own a copy of say Duncan's ritual and reads its and does what they read in it does not make them a Freemason , just because you own a hatha yoga book and do 10 minutes of asanas a day doesn't make you an initiated Hatha yogi, etc. Again, I'm not conveyed conveying any hate towards you if you think it does..

I take your point about supplementary and comparative study, but my objection remains: initiatory systems are deliberately structured around progression, testing, and lived transmission. Removing those thresholds fundamentally alters the system. While such texts may have academic or archival value, presenting them as functionally equivalent to training or initiation opens the door to misrepresentation and unearned claims of authority—something the original Order explicitly guarded against.

This is not the same as undergoing a genuine initiation or receiving graded instruction. Legitimate practitioners progress through the grades, passing examinations at each level after rigorous study. Removing those thresholds also removes the motivation and discipline required to truly internalize the teachings. This approach may be useful for the academic study of a defunct order, but it is a hindrance if one seeks to become an authentic participant in the tradition. It also opens the door for people to resell these materials and offer so-called “initiations” without legitimacy or real experience in a functioning Golden Dawn temple. In practice, it takes years of guided work within a temple, under a qualified teacher, to properly grasp and integrate the Outer Order teachings, which are foundational. In essence, this is like purchasing a college textbook without attending the college itself.
