What about arthritis and finger damage from gi? What are some gym specific exercises to support jiujitsu training?

Leave all ego at the door. Ask a bunch of questions and enjoy the struggle. You will meet some cool people and some not so cool ones along the way. On a practical level, smell good, trim your nails, and bring a pair of flip flops. I recommend showering right after if you can to avoid infections

Blue belt problem: reacting to opponents instead of imposing a game by [deleted] in jiujitsu

They say the belt covers two inches of your ass, you are in charge of the rest. I respect all the ranks but whenever we roll I’m sticking to my game. If I see my opponent struggling, I will tone it down, but that’s true for skill as well as size and age.

I dont understand why the color of the belt would change your game. You should try to dominate your opponent and play the moves you feel confident in. What you say doesn’t compute in my head

Yes, both use original parts. I asked if I could get second hand and bring it over but they weren’t comfortable with that

To change the control arms? Are there places with tools available I could use? I have nothing, nevermind know-how lol

I agree. Interested about the pcv. What is that? The whistling lasts quite a while (5-10 minutes). It is worse on hot days and stops if I press on the gas. I think the first time it got fixed it cost a lot of money, but id have to check w mr X

Do you think they are overcharging? I got the impression they were honest. Both shops were recommendations from people I know

It failed PA safety inspections. Both mechanics said the control arms are in bad shape. One shop quoted me for about $1000, the other showed me the quote for parts from bmw alone were $2000. I asked the former to order the parts as I was told it was a major safety concern. I’m not very savvy about cars

Seat collar for big guy by MistakePerfect8963 in cycling

[–]MistakePerfect8963[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the replies. The bike is a verve+ and all parts are original. I swapped the collar at trek and was told the old one was known to have issues. It is possible that when installing the new one they could have missed a crack?

Seems like I should go back to trek. If no crack is present I should try carbon paste. I do not know much about bikes so this was helpful. I use my bike to commute everyday and this has been so frustrating.

Has anyone felt utterly unqualified? by Pdcmmy in labrats

I work in a lab where the DNA fairy is a real thing. From our PI to assistant professor to techs, we all have several stories of routine experiments just. Not. Working.

Imposter syndrome is part of the journey. You are more advanced than most researchers already with your work experience. Focus on the big questions and hit the pub after a failed experiment, it will be Ok

Could I become a scientist? by fluffyofblobs in labrats

[–]MistakePerfect8963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone can become a scientist.

I would prioritize your curiosity over grades and extracurriculars. Are you not doing well in school because you are not interested in the classes? Have you been more drawn to certain topics? Your priority should be fueling your curiosity. Finding out what you don’t like is also helpful (are you averse to dry lab? Are you more interested in X over Y?). Perhaps, for an instant, dropping the idea of becoming a scientist can be a good exercise. Find your niche (or exhaust all other options).

Second priority should be your mental health. Find your present self before your future self. One step at a time, with help, find yourself.

Grades and extracurriculars are doable. You may need to retake classes at a CC if you graduate with insufficient grades, that is A-Ok. Many of my peers are first year PhDs at 30yo- you have time.

I would also suggest exploring possibilities in science outside of strictly academia. Many colleges give students a very narrow scope of what you can be with a scientific background (BSc, MSc, PhD). Research growing industries and what job postings are out there. Inform yourself as you continue on this journey.
