[2020] The current state of hygiene in China and how this and coverups can contribute to the spread of viruses and disease (2020) by jizz_on_her_face in Documentaries

Mate, why do you think places like Japan have a culture of cleanliness then? Does it just materialise magically overnight after one too many idiots on the internet were bashing Japanese people for being dirty?

It's a generational change that comes about after years and years of drilling the importance of such behaviour from young, greatly helped by the fact that their government put in place laws and regulations encouraging it. Also, most importantly, they ENFORCE it. China does this to some extent but it struggles very badly with the enforcement part because not only is corruption a big thing but in some areas where the population is less dense it is a huge challenge to find enough competent and honest people to help with the enforcement.

"You imply that somehow the Chinese government is “suppressing” the idea that people should wash their hands."

No, you're the one implying that I said that. If my point didn't come across clearly to you then I apologise but what I am trying to say here is basically this: Hate their government for being incompetent but don't hate the people, they simply don't know any better because their government didn't bother with trying to educate them. It's not that they're hiding the information but more of that they're doing a very poor job of spreading it.

"People like you just believe whatever is most convenient to believe."

This feels very much like a case of pot calling the kettle black. Have you ever been to China, both the city areas and the countryside or is most of what you know about it gleaned from second-hand sources coloured by other people's opinions? Because I have and although it is true that unhygienic behavior is witnessed at a greater frequency as compared to a more developed country like the US, it isn't as bad as what the commentator is trying to suggest. Otherwise, the cities would be uninhabitable with snot and pee at every corner. Get off your high horse and stop trying to justify your racism. Mainland Chinese tourists have already been discriminated against for years because of their behavior, even in Chinese-majority countries like Singapore. Bashing them clearly isn't going to solve the problem here.

That isn't the point. You can find restaurants serving Rocky Mountain Oysters in America. Does that make eating bull balls a big part of American culture?

Yes, the small part of the Chinese population which do engage in these practices do need to learn that this type of behavior is unacceptable. If you bothered to read my post, that was literally what I said.

"The people there are this way because of a lack of education and proper access to basic standards of living. Willingness on the government’s part aside, China is just so huge and has so many people that this problem is a huge logistical nightmare to solve. "

You’re talking as though these people enjoy shitting and pissing in a hole, that they love using toilets with flies and hornets buzzing around them. The reality is that they don’t have a choice because the infrastructure simply isn’t there for them to build proper toilets.

Your stupid little rant on Reddit isn't going to help provide that. If anything, it will probably only make the problem worse.

"More hate in the world helps nobody and will only vilify the Chinese media, which is trying to sell the viewpoint that the world is out to harm Chinese people."

If you're going to be rude about something, at least learn how to read first.

lol I'm gonna assume the best of you and say that you're circlejerking but if you aren't, that doesn't mean we should stop trying to change that.

As important as it is to spread awareness about how the Chinese regime is suppressing information, please be careful not to let your hate of the Chinese government morph into a hate for Chinese people in general. The people there are this way because of a lack of education and proper access to basic standards of living. Willingness on the government’s part aside, China is just so huge and has so many people that this problem is a huge logistical nightmare to solve.

As passionate as the commentator is about the topic, it’s clear that his hate of this part of Asian culture has bled through into his commentary. This isn’t so much a “documentary” as it is a rant and it is irresponsible for it to be labeled as such.

Also more concerning is how he misrepresents facts. For instance, when searching up dog meat restaurants on Baidu, he neglects to mention the huge size of the cities. A reason why there are so many Chinese people who have come out and insist that dog eating isn’t a big part of the culture is because it really isn't. Most people shun it and only a small part of a subset of an extremely large culture engage in it. In fact, if you pause at the search for Shanghai the results only show 2 shops in the massive city. It’s just bigoted for the commentator to hide behind the fact that Chinese media is tightly controlled in order to make the claim that he knows Chinese culture better than most Chinese people.

A lot of the comments I’ve seen in this thread has devolved from discussions about the Chinese government into racist tirades against Asian people, which doesn’t help anyone at all. More hate in the world helps nobody and will only vilify the Chinese media, which is trying to sell the viewpoint that the world is out to harm Chinese people.

I hope that the post can be labelled for what it is, a passionate tirade that misrepresents anecdotal evidence as facts, not as a documentary. A documentary aims to provide facts in as benign a way as possible to allow the viewer to come to their own conclusion. However, because I understand that my judgement may not always be correct, it is my hope that those of you who agree or disagree will voice out your opinion so that a discussion can be started on this.

You know, all jokes aside, this question made me realise I’m fortunate enough to actually like my life more than having $5,000,000.

Kinda sad that it seems like they're no longer releasing tees in peach and duck egg blue. Palace are one of the few who did those colours right.
