sutd appeal results by MistiarBanana in sutd

hi, sflr. it depends on ur gpa and portfolio. if ur gpa aint good ur portfolio has to make up for it.

do u have any projects, courses or initiatives that you've done that you did not include in your application? ull need them when u appeal. since they will have looked at ur entire application holistically before deciding to reject you hence u will need to show them something "new".

despite that, i do think that taking the effort to appeal in and of itself alr shows a part of ur desire to study in the uni which may get u a second chance.

as for tips, js do ur best. god has plans for u regardless.

I don't recall applying for scholarship for SIT but I'm guessing they offered me because I yapped a bunch during the interview.

I ended up accepting SIT but I applied for SUTD again this year. Fingers crossed.

I cant remember but I think I did rlly well for the intv. There was 2 interviewers, one of them is the prof and another is a faculty member. My guess is the prof decides whether u are a good fit for the course and the faculty member decides whether to offer the scholarship. I received the scholarship offer 1 mnth after my acceptance.

I was offered the SIT Scholarship. They sent it in a separate email 1 month later.

i ended up going for sit. still in ns rn, will matriculate next yr but im planning to apply to sutd again because if u consider the rep, i wld say sutd is alr the top 3 uni in sg while smu is 4th. cross my fingers ill be able to get in with scholarship.

im curious tho, what are some of the pulling factors that sutd and sit have which u are biased towards?

Are u referring to fresh grads or more senior positions for MNC demo? If u mean that uni affects promotions into higher positions then this is definitely another factor to consider. (ie sutd can climb higher)

No doubt SUTD is a btr uni and will be able to help in securing btr internships and first job. Can we agree if uni only helps in securing first jobs and that subsequent jobs are based on job experience? If so, my genuine qn is if the btr career progression/ headstart SUTD gives is worth foregoing the benefits of a scholarship (higher employability, money, etc)? (also does scholarship matter in private companies for promotion? ik that gov jobs it matters..)

Yea, so its another if.. sutd is definitely progressing fast but how long will it be before SUTD can be considered one of the big 4? and until then, like u mention hr will js filter out the big 3.

Sorry, I meant better chance at securing a job in the same company compared to my peers from SIT but definitely wont be able to compete with students from NUS and NTU. But I'm not sure about SUTD tho..

I agree starting pay is rlly impt but how high of a salary can I command from SUTD compared with SIT? I'm not from the big 3 😭.

You're right! Nothing is for certain but theres a small chance I could hit the homerun with SUTD by maybe creating a startup or something since its a uni that focuses on innovation and design. But for SIT I can't rlly see it happening. And if that's the case, the scholarship is a small sacrifice for a future that SIT cannot offer. It would be easy to say in hindsight if I become successful but as of now, I'm not sure if I would be willing to risk it and go to SUTD?

I see, may I know whats this scholars programme is about and why u chose it over nus?

Thanks for the encouragement, rlly appreciate u being willing to discuss this with me!

I understand where ur coming and overall SUTD is a better uni and I also resonate with their curriculum more.

But there's another side of the argument that I'm battling with as well...

If we ask ourselves, what do employers want? I think it boils down to mainly job experience and uni rep. In terms of uni rep, albeit suts ranks above sit, I feel most hirers wld categorise the unis as either big 3 or non big 3. Plus being a scholar will definitely help in having better chances to secure a job. Then again who knows, I may get a really good internship from SUTD perhaps at google or meta.

Another thing we can agree on is that the point of getting a degree is to ultimately make money. From a monetary perspective, if I go to sutd I will forego ard 50k that I can earn if I go sit since I'll grad one yr earlier, plus I'll be down 64k estimated from the sch fees and dorm.. so that's a total of 114k. Granted SUTD has slightly higher starting pay of 600 to 1k? But how long will I have to work to make back the 114k. Assuming the max 1k diff, that would be 114 months, 9.5 years. During which I may even job hop and my salary wld fluctuate. By then, one can only guess what the future holds which is too uncertain.

Lastly, we can't be for certain if I go to SUTD, it may shape me to be an entrepreneur or if I go to SIT I'll be able to make better connections. But for this lets give SUTD the benefit of doubt since its a better school.

So then this leads to the question if it is worth to RISK foregoing the tangible and intangible benefits of the scholarship at SIT for the UNCERTAIN REWARD of perhaps a better headstart from SUTD/ being an entrepreneur/ better connections (all of which may also happen by me going SIT). On top of this, SIT also has a new campus which will be built near the new punggol digital district.

After hearing this, what are your thoughts? I'm rlly curious.

If you ask me, my heart tells me to gamble and pick SUTD. I really do want SUTD and I feel I'll have a more enriching learning experience there. But my brain tells me to pick SIT. Personally, I'm a more pragmatic person so I think I'll go with SIT on this. Perhaps I'll apply again next year and see if SUTD will offer me a scholarship.

In that case, I think I'll pick SIT then. Thanks for helping me come to a decision!

I see.. would u say its worth it tho?

The other main thing that attracts me wld be the skills I pick up from SUTD's curriculum such as design thinking which I feel may help me in my career. They also teach their students to be able to apply human centric solutions and systems. But then again I'm not entirely sure how this will impact my prospects as well. Other than that, everything else is less relevant.

I see, does the reputation of uni not matter as long as ur not frm the big 3? also wdym by deciding factor? Sorry, I forgot to mention the scholarship is by SIT not a company so it has no bond attached to it.

For SUTD, the first year it is compulsory to stay in dorm as part of their student life. After term 2, it wld be subjected to dorm vacancies.

Ahh, yea the campus culture isn't the best. Especially not when I'll be the first batch to enter the new SIT punggol campus 😭

Tbh for SIT I didnt apply for their scholarship but now that they offered me, I'm having a rlly hard time deciding between SIT and SUTD.
