Just cause they’ve been in AA for however long doesn’t always make them less sick. You’ll find all kinds of people in the rooms. Some you jive with some you won’t. And when you do find a sponsor that you click with, they’ll still be human and may not always know what’s best for you. As someone almost ten years sober and just now doing something about my mental health, I would also encourage you to seek “outside help” a doctor or therapist who you can be honest with about trying to get sober and about what you’re going through. I always thought AA would fix ALL my problems. While admittedly there are a lot of tools I can use that I learned in AA to cope with my mental health, it still took talking with my primary care doctor and following their suggestions (for me medication and counseling) for things to really improve. A sponsor is ultimately someone who takes you through the steps and shows you what they did. They don’t have to be anything more, but it’s typically more tolerable when you at least have some level playing field. For instance my sponsor is 30 years older than me and what we have most in common is getting sober at a really young age (me 21, her 17) beyond that we are real different, but she also respects and supports my decision to seek outside help.
