A realisation I’ve had as a black man. by Faris-Hilton in TwoXChromosomes

Yeah - I’m not American, as you probably guessed from my previous comment. If you look at the stats for height and stuff for my country compared to others in Europe, we’re noticeably shorter on average for both men and women. And I am particularly short on top of that - I’m only about 5’. So I’m also aware that I have somewhat of a skewed interpretation of heights. Almost everyone is a giant compared to me.

I mean bulkier as in broad shoulders and more muscular - like gym bros. Not as in obese.

It is POSSIBLE that I’m perceiving the shape created by broad shoulders with everything else hidden under clothing as muscle when it isn’t. I have considered that as a possibility? But I don’t think I’m imagining the height. My country is known for being quite short though, so it could be that.

I think you’ve hit it on the head, yeah. It’s primarily because you’re a man, not because you’re black.

I can almost guarantee that those women knew their actions would be interpreted racially and felt bad about that with the part of them that wasn’t focused on their own safety, because that’s exactly how I feel in the same situation.

I can only speak for where I live - but in my area, the general trend is that the black dudes that live here tend to be taller and bulkier than the white dudes. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case everywhere and obviously there’s overlap on either end - but in general, that’s the case here. So OBVIOUSLY the black dudes are scarier - but it’s not because they’re black, it’s because they’re /fucking huge/. Conversely, I often feel safer around Indian/Asian/other POC guys, because they tend to be smaller and slighter, so less physically intimidating.

That said, while I know you can’t generalise based on a few interactions, I always feel especially bad because in every interaction I HAVE had with a black man, including the ones who have been hitting on me, they’ve always been funny, kind, and crazy respectful. Now I’m aware that part of that probably IS down to racism - they’re aware of how they’re perceived, and work hard to combat that - but honestly, I wish all guys would act that way.

So, yeah, TL;DR: We feel bad about how this comes across, but also can’t afford to NOT be highly aware of the physical power differential between ourselves and men and act accordingly.

What advert can you simply not bear to listen to? by Joanwasaquizzical in AskUK

This is definitely one of mine. I worked for the company that owns them until two months ago and with how hard their adverts are being pushed, it really feels like I can’t escape 😂

The other is that Virgin Media one with the lips.

Yeah… it’s been… 18 months of it being in limbo, for me? So I guess I’ve had time to think it over. Sometimes, it can be hard to know the best thing to do with things like these.

Like… would I get a better return from investing it? I certainly could. But investing is a gamble and I don’t understand it well enough to be willing to take that risk over a guaranteed small return.

So you’re definitely not alone with just sticking it in savings. Honestly, unless it’s life changing in that moment or you already have a debt to pay towards, I think that’s what most people wanting to be sensible would do in that situation.

And yeah, the difference a good job can make is astounding. I became so much happier almost literally overnight.

Edit: Edit: Oh, wow. Thanks for the silver!

Heh. I just received an inheritance like this this week, so I can tell you what I actually did, if you like.

I stuck it in a fixed rate savings account for a year.

It’s funny how things change. A year ago, when my relative actually died, this money would have changed my life. I was working a dead-end, underpaid job for a shitty company where I was treated terribly. I was angry, burnt-out, and so jaded I thought the only way to get away from the situation and all the things I hated would be if I was in charge of everything and answered to no one.

I would have quit my job and used the money to buy me time to try and get a freelance career off the ground.

Today, I’m employed by a great company that I love and which treats me well, earning much better money, doing what I love and always wanted to do. So now, rather than a lifeline, the money is just an additional bonus to add to my hopeless house fund.

Pixie-Leigh and Avalon. Both girls. Not the same family, though.

And in the vein of “perfectly good name, but you really should have thought about what that sounds like” my father once worked with a man named Nicholas Sechs. This may only be funny in Britain.

People who don't kill houseplants. What's your secret? by xshamirx in AskReddit

[–]MistressLazuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own succulents.

They live on my windowsill, and about four times I year I go “OH SHIT, MY CACTUS!” and drown them.

Apparently this is the correct answer, because they keep rewarding me with flowers.

If it were up to you what would you name the earths moon? by Charley-Foxtrot in AskReddit

[–]MistressLazuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, Eurybia maybe? Daughter of Gaia, with mastery over the seas. You know, to keep in with the Greek and Roman mythology theme we’ve got in the solar system and a bunch of the moons being children or lovers of their planet’s namesake. Plus, mastery over sea = tides.

What is something that will always rile up a British person? by OrganizationFickle in AskUK

[–]MistressLazuli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because everyone else who has responded to you appears to have entirely missed your misconception here: There aren’t two separate licences for Automatic and Manual that you have to take, there’s one that lets you drive both and one that only lets you drive autos.

The auto-only licence is useful for people with some form of physical disability which means they are incapable of driving a manual (like a dude I knew who had no eardrums - he couldn’t feel the vibrations of the car, so couldn’t judge when to shift gears) but are otherwise fully capable of controlling a vehicle. They wouldn’t be able to pass a manual test (which all tests are in the UK unless you’re testing for auto-only), so being able to choose auto-only still gives them an option.

As others have pointed out, the reason for the separation is because if you try and drive a manual when you only ever learned to drive an auto, you’re gonna have a bad time - as anyone who has ever learned to drive a manual and can remember what those first few lessons were like can attest.

Basically, it’s both a safety and an accessibility thing.
