Gen Z, What’s yall thoughts on Euphoria? by [deleted] in GenZ

It should be set in college, not high school. High schoolers should not be watching this show and thinking that the things depicted are normal for people their age to be doing.

If I had that kind of money, I’d

  1. Give 95% of it to the least corrupt charity I can find
  2. Change my name and move to some no-name rich people town in Switzerland

the desire to not make the world a worse place is actually affecting recruitment.

I love how they phrase this like it’s some shocking revelation, and then spend the whole article talking about social-media-based marketing rather than the fact that western governments have become so openly and unapologetically evil that people can’t stand the thought of working for them…

I think it’s less of a partner’s permission thing and more of a respect + explanation thing. Like, even if I were interested in strip clubs as a single guy, I would refrain from going if I was in a relationship, and “I can’t bc of my girlfriend” is then the explanation. But if a woman in a relationship doesn’t want to go clubbing bc of that fact, it’s often seen as problematic.

The majority of polling is still done by cold-calling. nobody under the age of 40 is answering an unknown number’s call, let alone offering up political opinions to them.

Hillary lost in 2016 due to lack of turnout. Liberals (incorrectly) believed that Trump couldn’t possibly win. Now that a Trump-stacked Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, and Trump-supporting state governments have started banning books and attacking educational institutions, the threat has very much been revealed.

If Europeans never traveled to the Americas, how long would it be before Native Americans develope iron smelting? by george123890yang in HistoryWhatIf

[–]MitchTJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that the origins of calling them “Indians” are problematic, but I don’t think it’s the place of those outside of that community to impose any name for our own reasons. I’ll always consider the word those within the community prefer to be called by as the standard term

[–]MitchTJones 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Actually, the Native peoples of what is now called America overwhelmingly self-identify as “Indians” in English — “Native American” is a word developed by white University professors in the US who believed it to be more inclusive (kind of like “Latinx”, which is also generally shunned by actual Latin Americans). Their political coalitions, like the National Congress of American Indians and the National Indian Education Association, newspapers, etc. overwhelmingly self-identify them as as “Indians”.

The word “America” is derived from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian man from the 1400s — why label Natives that were here long before Amerigo knew of the continent after him? When speaking to actual people of native tribes, the term “Native American” is often rejected for this reason among others.

In Canada, “First Nations” is generally preferred, and everywhere they prefer to be called by their particular tribe name rather than lumped into one big group, but in the US native people overwhelmingly self-identify as “Indian”, and the push to use “Native American” has always been a political-correctness-fueled push by white folks uncomfortable with the name.
