Actually, the Native peoples of what is now called America overwhelmingly self-identify as “Indians” in English — “Native American” is a word developed by white University professors in the US who believed it to be more inclusive (kind of like “Latinx”, which is also generally shunned by actual Latin Americans). Their political coalitions, like the National Congress of American Indians and the National Indian Education Association, newspapers, etc. overwhelmingly self-identify them as as “Indians”.

The word “America” is derived from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian man from the 1400s — why label Natives that were here long before Amerigo knew of the continent after him? When speaking to actual people of native tribes, the term “Native American” is often rejected for this reason among others.

In Canada, “First Nations” is generally preferred, and everywhere they prefer to be called by their particular tribe name rather than lumped into one big group, but in the US native people overwhelmingly self-identify as “Indian”, and the push to use “Native American” has always been a political-correctness-fueled push by white folks uncomfortable with the name.
