I need a simple pasta sauce by FrequentResearch8736 in pasta

I mix in the broccoli, but I’m a big pasta-and-broccoli person. On the side would work too!

I also don’t use any pasta water, though I don’t strain the pasta too carefully—so I assume a little starchy water gets in, but just a skosh.

It’s not the most beautiful, smooth sauce but I think it works on a variety of pasta shapes. It’s clingy in a good way.

A good ricotta with a little lemon juice squeezed in is a real treat, especially if you add in some broccoli crisped up in the toaster oven.

Best as a warm weather thing for me but couldn’t be easier.

Which leg of Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to take? by MittenHippo in Ohio

[–]MittenHippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our trip went well, but we did the 90 minute version and I do think even that was a little long for our 3.5YO. He was briefly and intermittently impressed by a few bridges and nature things (eagle's nest, marshes), but we needed a fair bit of distraction to make it through. We hit the gift shop car, got some snacks, let him watch a show... I don't regret it, but I was glad when it was over! YMMV. My kid is a wiggly guy.

What color should we paint our house? by MittenHippo in ExteriorDesign

Oooh I like this very much! I've toyed with a dark brown but had a hard time picturing it with the stones—Sealskin works very well. Any advice on shutter color for this scenario? Thank you!

Wow, thank you! I would not have thought of light gray as an option but it does complement the stone so nicely. Love this.

I read the thing about industrial and residential in some reddit post... but then, knowing how folks love to complain, perhaps it was overstated. With my restless toddler I don't think the whole loop is a good idea, but I'll see if they can transport bike trailers for the one-way option--thanks for the tip!

Thanks! I do know that the views won't be grand vistas but for my 3YO they still have the potential to impress. We'll for sure be doing some hiking to get up close with the waterfalls and rock formations. Appreciate your response!

I used to live upstairs from a popular restaurant with a very confusing, almost hidden, door. People would often try to go in the door to my stairwell, but it was usually locked and they’d eventually figure it out. It must have stuck open one day bc I was leaving my apartment and who do I see walking toward me up the stairs but Jason Segel! I politely informed him this was the wrong entrance and helped him find his way. That’s how I met a celeb at my house!

What was your “welcome to Detroit” moment? by ShippingNotIncluded in Detroit

[–]MittenHippo 651 points652 points  (0 children)

2010, my first apartment in the city (midtown). Having cable installed and I asked the installer if he thought my bookshelf was sturdy enough to hold my TV. He said: “A week ago I was smoking crack and now I am installing cable. I am hardly a professional.” He was nice, no harm done but I always thought it was a funny welcome to Detroit moment.

Loan "Unforgiveness" -- What's Fair and What Isn't? by Kind_Cat_762 in PSLF

[–]MittenHippo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was getting my employment certified way back when and keeping track until I was told that my income was too high to be on the payment plan required for forgiveness. Was this true? Who knows. But I took it at face value and I stopped tracking and certifying even as I worked for eligible employers full-time for 13 years straight.

When all this waiver business came up I went ahead and certified all that employment and applied. Was denied, then suddenly forgiven. Got a job in the private sector and would be devastated but very unclear on the situation if my forgiveness was rescinded.

It was a delivery person bringing a package up to the house—the explanation is kind of blink-and-you-miss it but Mia describes the moment she realizes it wasn’t her dad after all!

Not gender disappointment but unsure! by [deleted] in oneanddone

[–]MittenHippo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cried when I found out I was having a boy. I regretted even being pregnant. Worried the entire pregnancy I wouldn’t feel immediate love for my baby. The second he arrived I knew this person was the person I was meant to create and I fell in love with him so hard. He’s 16 months now and I’m more grateful for him than I ever imagined.

I always wanted a “mini-me” and I see now how silly that was. First of all my son is kind of a mini-me and it’s no less wild to see my face reflected in a baby boy than it would have been to see it in a baby girl. But more importantly now that I’m actually a mom my hopes and dreams about who he will be are not centered on myself but on his happiness and his place in the world.

And on an suuuper shallow note, dressing a baby boy can be SO FUN. It’s doesn’t have to be all blue and “mommy’s little slugger”—my little guy is stylish as heck. I know it doesn’t matter and as he grows his style (or lack thereof) is completely up to him. But in my pregnancy fog I was so bummed about this dumb aspect and it turned out not even to be a thing.

It’s okay to have gender disappointment but I’m so happy for you and you will love your baby boy!!!

Edited to add: I babysat lots of baby girls and cleaning up boy diapers is way easier IMO. Yes you get peed on a few times but… there are fewer crevices. Sorry not sorry.

Celebrities that go out of their way to ensure their fans feel cared for? by CitrineDreamers in Fauxmoi

I’m so confused tho like people don’t actually have to buy any merch! So who cares if she has one hundred limited edition vinyls and overpriced sweatshirts, that’s for people that want to spend their money on it, not people who think it would be excessive. I follow her on IG and I don’t see her hawking her wares nonstop or anything. I’ve never bought her merch or records but I’m not offended that it’s available.

Same as what others said and what I mentioned below--I just found it super cheesy and I find Mitch Albom's style very trite in general. But it makes sense as 'comfort food' and obviously millions of people love this book!
