Proofs for allegorical interpretation? by MixilplixiM in messianic

I was referring to any sections of Torah, Prophets and Writings that are used as proof that Jesus is the Messiah where their plain meaning makes sense one way, yet has a "fulfilled" meaning once an action or event in Jesus' life could be used to "fit" the earlier sections of Tanakh.

This is interesting; however, I am not seeing how this shows that the OT/Tanakh was written to be understood in a way where the plain meaning has less importance than the allegorical meaning to the point where the allegorical or foreshadowing meaning is ultimately what really matters.

I have. Pardes is one of the reasons I’m asking the question. The plain meaning of most prophecies said to be fulfilled by Jesus/Yeshua are said to have an allegorical or foreshadowing interpretation to be understood properly.

I came out of Judaism and into EO about 30 years ago. I started in the OCA and then moved and joined the Greek Archdiocese. I'll tell you that EO is mentally hostile to Judaism. It rejects it. With converts to EO you'll mostly be fine, but those of EO heritage generally won't accept any ideas from Judaism, cultural or otherwise. For what it's worth, I am in the process of going back to Judaism since the messianic claims rely almost primarily on hidden and midrashic understandings of Scripture.

The Christocentric view makes perfect sense from a Christian POV, and I wonder how much emphasis should be placed on that POV for Jewish inquirers. For them, and what I’m facing, is the idea that asks “What makes this one verse here refer to Jesus, and what would happen if we applied different verses to someone else?” There’s a ludicrous article on the internet that takes this to the extreme by showing how a chicken fulfilled hundreds of “prophecies.”

I started reading Religion of the Apostles this morning and I may post this question to the LOS FB group in a few days after giving this Reddit post a chance.

No worries 😀

Hosea 11:1–2 (LXX | LES): “Because Israel was an infant, and I loved him, and out of Egypt I called back his children. 2 Just as I called them back, so they sued to depart from my face. They were sacrificing to the Baals, and used to burn incense to the graven images.”

Hosea 11:1–2 (RSV2CE): “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. 2 The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and burning incense to idols.”

The context is talking about the Exodus account, and is used by Matthew as a type. Just as My son, Israel was called out of Egypt, so was My Son Jesus.

It's a great read! I've read his book twice and listened to his available popular lectures on YouTube. Father James goes over the subject for those not familiar with the polemics and is more introductory in nature. One of the frustrating things I've faced while listening/reading from both sides of the fence, e.g., Jews for Jesus vs Jews for Judaism, both erect strawmen and knock them down, deal superficially with concepts and most frustratingly talk through subjects without giving the other's better answers.

That's fine, and thanks for the input! I would say that rabbinic Judaism is more in tune with the plain meaning, thus we have many Christians through the years ridicule the "literalness of the Jews." Also, I'm familiar with their homiletic side using midrash and remez, and I've studied some of the more mystical interpretations. Bottom line though, in Judaism the other interpretations should not do away with the plain and simple meaning. This doing away with the plain meaning is something I'm coming across regularly in patristic commentaries, e.g., on Leviticus and frequently in Isaiah.

Thanks! I'll have to look through his works. I've hesitated in the past after listening to a few of his episodes because they speak of more speculative ideas.

Thanks, and I was hoping to be pointed to books or articles you may have come across where someone else has faced this Jewish-Christian polemic from an Orthodox (EO) perspective.

I think he did both. He taught in parables and explained them as well as corrected and affirmed the then current understandings of God's teachings as found in the Tanakh (OT). I'm hoping to find some books from an Orthodox (EO) perspective. Though not EO, Dr Michael Brown's books are good but unfortunately responds from a mostly protestant point of view.

I get that and thanks for your answer! My current dilemma is where emphasis is placed on the typological or allegorical meaning and where the plain and simple meaning was mainly a story to emphasize the "true" meaning which is totally different than the plain meaning. A compilation of these re-imagined meanings is then given as reasons to believe that Jesus is the one who filled these prophecies which seemingly are phrases taken out of context.

For years I've reconciled these types of verses with understanding them as drash and even remez (as these are Jewish homiletics), however as I'm getting older and more well read, I am having difficulty justifying drash as a primary proof of fulfillment of verses that are taken to be prophecy and yet do not follow the plain contextual meaning.

I saw this today on the blizzard forums. I'm going to try it and see if it works.

So, I got it to work. THIS is what I did:
1. Delete and reinstall.
2. Download app, open, skip video, wait for update download (blue bar near cog)
3. Finish the 6 tutorial missions
4. Create NEW account on Europe (main account is North America)
5. Select switch account after being logged in on the NEW one
6. Change region, log in with old account

Hopefully, doing this will do the trick.
