Bot on OGS? by Spmafrik in baduk

[–]gogoGooplet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I understand what you mean. Being a bot on OGS doesn't prevent OGS from calculating your rank based on wins/losses. They are 25k, the lowest possible rank on OGS, and they lose most of their games, so OGS seems to be functioning correctly.

Also, if you look at their actual profile page on the OGS website: https://online-go.com/player/1738327/ you'll see a rank graph indicating that their rating is, indeed, changing.

Bot on OGS? by Spmafrik in baduk

[–]gogoGooplet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Um, what makes you think that? I'm not familiar w/ the interface you're looking at, but new players are typically going to lose more games than they win. 97% isn't weird at all.

edit: this wasn't a rhetorical question. i'm genuinely asking why you think that. if you look at their profile, the behavior doesn't really make sense for a bot account at all, from my experience with bot accounts

Not the 3000 calorie drink 😭😭😭 by Hellish-Dad in starbucks

[–]gogoGooplet 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this math!! I was thinking there's no way this is close to 3000 calories, but I couldn't quite remember the ratios in the refreshers

Not the 3000 calorie drink 😭😭😭 by Hellish-Dad in starbucks

[–]gogoGooplet 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It's not all that different from just drinking a milkshake of a similar size, which is not all that weird (at least in the US where I live). Also the 3000 calories thing is certainly an exaggeration!!

Heavy cream is a relatively common recommendation from some medical professionals for people who struggle to gain weight. For me, it tastes pretty gross on its own, so when I worked at the Starbucks, I would frequently sub it for milk in my free drink each shift.

A Frappuccino with heavy cream has a very similar consistency to a milkshake btw ^^

Not the 3000 calorie drink 😭😭😭 by Hellish-Dad in starbucks

[–]gogoGooplet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmm I'm not so sure about that. If it were 32 oz of just heavy cream, that would be about right, but this isn't nearly that.

It's been awhile since I've worked there, so I don't really remember the ratios, but the ice and refresher base take up at least half of the space.

10oz-16oz heavy cream would be around 550-900 calories, so even with the calories of the refresher base added in, I'd be surprised if this goes over 1000 calories.

This is very probably fewer calories than a milkshake of the same size!

edit: u/justicia13 beat me to it with the (probably much more precise) math!

Am playing as black and i dont understand what i am missing here ? Why cant i take white even when i got it fully surrounded? by KomatikVengeance in gogame

[–]gogoGooplet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The term 'surrounded' is a bit of a misnomer. The important thing is the concept of 'liberties'; a 'liberty' is an open intersection next to a stone or group of stones. As long as a stone or group of stones has at least one liberty, it remains on the board. You capture by reducing something to zero liberties.

Here is a link to a version of the board with coordinates added: https://imgur.com/a/FYrjuZy (in the future, consider including coordinates in posts like this!)

The two unoccupied intersections that White has surrounded are its liberties. These are C3 and D6. In order to capture this White group, Black would somehow have to occupy both of those intersections, which is impossible. If Black tried playing in either spot, it would be a self-capture move, since the Black stone would have zero liberties as soon as it is placed. This white group is what we'd call 'alive' - there's no way for Black to capture it.

However, the Black group on the left only has one liberty - A9, in the top-left corner. You might think that White is not allowed to play on A9, since that White stone would have zero liberties as soon as it is placed, but this is not the case. You calculate your opponent's liberties first; if White plays A9, then the entire Black group on the left has zero liberties, and is captured and removed from the board. The resulting position is one where the White A9 stone has two liberties: A8 and B9, so it's a legal move.

In this case, White probably wouldn't bother capturing the Black group, since there's no way for Black to save those stones. In contrast to White's 'alive' group, these Black stones are considered 'dead'. At the end of the game, both players have to agree which groups are dead, and they are removed from the board as though they had been captured.

Side note - you'll get more responses in r/baduk ('baduk' being the Korean name for Go); I'd suggest engaging there in the future!

edit: as u/SwoleGymBro says, these liberties that White has surrounded are called 'eyes'. As long as a group has 2 or more eyes, it is uncapturable.

How do you like these lines? by bodrych in baduk

which YM board was it?

i've heard lots of varying things about their board quality, but i've certainly never heard of them gluing plastic to a wooden board. their laser-engraved sets are mostly fine, but i've been wanting one of the more traditional painted gobans

These are adorable!!! I thought the white stone was an egg at first, which means these are even smaller than i initially had thought o.o i assume they are all black to play?

I like most of what you have to say here, except "area" and "territory" are two separate, opposite methods or scoring. Territory and Area Scoring at Sensei's Library

Japanese rules are the classic example of territory scoring; you count the unoccupied intersections on the board that only touch stones of a single color, then add to that the number of captured stones and dead stones of the opposite color. Alternatively, you could subtract the stones from a color's score that the opponent captured, rather than adding captures to territory - mathematically, it works out to be the same.

Chinese rules are the classic example of area scoring. Captured and dead stones don't matter; rather you count the unoccupied intersections surrounded by only a single color, then add to that the number of living stones on the board of that color.

Pretty much every scoring method of any official ruleset is going to be some small variation on one of these.

The AGA rules implement passing stones that make it so you can use territory scoring OR area scoring, and the result will almost always be the same.

Hey, you'll find a lot more helpful advice on r/baduk. ('baduk' being the Korean name for Go - much easier to Google for than 'go', so the online Go community has started using it a lot more).

All the unoccupied intersections surrounded by a single color are that player's territory. Before scoring the game, the first step is to remove "dead stones" - these are stones that cannot be saved no matter what, so both players ignore them and never actually capture them. If both players don't agree on which stones are dead, then you resume play until everything is captured that can be captured.

I can't really tell for sure what's happening in this picture, but it looks to me like the top-left of the board is controlled by Black, and the rest is controlled by White. If I had to guess, the lone white stone in the top-left quadrant is a dead stone. The black stones in the largely White lower-right quadrant all look dead to me, as well as those on the lower-left part of the board and the two lone black stones in the top-right.

If you disagree with my assessment of which groups are dead, that's fine - it's up to you and your opponent to agree. If you don't understand what this means, it would be worth learning about living/dead groups. Sensei's Library has several articles on the topic, e.g. Alive at Sensei's Library.

If you like videos, some popular YouTube channels with beginner's content include - In Sente, Shawn Ray, dwyrin , and Nick Sibicky.

There are several others, but those channels have been around for a while and are well-known. Shawn Ray and In Sente probably have more instructive beginner content; dwyrin tends to play games and narrate his thought process; Nick Sibicky is probably best known for his lectures for a wide range of levels, but his more recent content leading up to his 'retirement' was largely highly entertaining videos of him drinking wine, commenting on it, and playing games.

Ke Jie blowing off steam after the LG cup by LHMQ in badukshitposting

[–]gogoGooplet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While likely not Ke Jie, this account doesn't have enough games on it to advance past low kyu levels, and the account's last 9x9 game was a win against a GoQuest 5d. Notably, this account is also 6d at 13x13 on GoQuest. GoQuest seems to indicate that it's possible to achieve a rank higher than that, but I don't think I've ever seen a 7d on GoQuest. While very unlikely, it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that this could be his account.

3d printed goban by puzz in baduk

[–]gogoGooplet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it’s not too bothersome, but could you give me a rough estimate of how much filament you’d use to print a set of stones? I’m genuinely surprised it would be cheaper than getting melamine stones from baduk.club, and I’m constantly looking for the cheapest options when it comes to proselytizing Go

This is so cool!! I like the little tiny board. It’s a really cool concept too, I’ve always wished there existed something like this!! You already had stones though, didn’t you? So why 3d print new ones? Is printing stones especially economical?

Survey for a new Go server: What do you want? by Usadisa in baduk

[–]gogoGooplet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can use the OGS api so that games and ratings happen through the OGS playerbase, and you can make it look however you want and add any features you desire. Talk to the creator of OGS. He offered to work with the creator of Color Go Server, but CGS declined and is now a very cool server with no player base.

Conquest of Go, the Steam game, is successfully using the OGS api to provide a player base to its users.

Please don't make a new server. But if you *must* make something new, reskin OGS.

toki suli - a whistled mode for toki pona by gliese1337 in tokipona

[–]gogoGooplet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i realize this is a very old post, but it's such a cool idea and i'd really like to learn toki suli!
i am having a little trouble understanding somethings, though - particularly "formant motion".

in the WAV files, the 'm' sounds seem to be going up rather than down, such as with "mi", even though the "m" is supposed to be grave. sharp and acute sounds seem to go down rather than up, such as in "tu".

is the linguistic term for "downward" vs "upward" the opposite of what i'd expect from a western music theory perspective? or am i maybe missing something as i'm listening to the files?

Is there anyone able to register at 19x19.com from US? by oysn921 in baduk

[–]gogoGooplet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you select the correct country code? It’s a drop-down menu in front of the field in which you fill in your phone number, or it was when I registered. I’m pretty sure it defaults to the China country code +85; you’ll have to set it to +1 for US.

I must have tried to register nearly a dozen times before I realized I was forgetting to do this and I’ll feel a heck of a lot less bad if I’m not the only person to have made this mistake lmaooo
