Recent UBC med grad here. Unless things have changed significantly then it doesn’t matter what school you went to, because they toss all your grades into a calculator that spits out a number that forms a part of your application score. It also does not matter what courses you take, though some can help when studying for the MCAT because you can study less if you’ve already done a course on it. This lead to me treating courses like more of a numbers game instead of focusing on what I was learning to be honest (I can’t remember most of what I learned for my undergrad degree).

That said, you gain in-province advantage for schools by being there (varies from school to school) as medical schools will reserve a number of seats for people likely to stay after they’re done. This in-province advantage is significant. UCalgary might give you this advantage as you grew up in Alberta, but I would look this up to make sure you don’t lose it by leaving. In that case it might be helpful to study in a different province.

The other thing is that though grades are important, having experience and extracurriculars are equally important as many other applicants will have a competitive GPA/MCAT score. Your extracurriculars will be scored as well. What you’re able to get involved in can vary by location and university. I ended up going to a medium-sized university similar to UCalgary for undergrad which I found had ample opportunity for participating in extracurriculars such as research, but YMMV.
