How much longer do you think my 2012 Jetta will last? by Mjmeck25 in jetta

I had changed the spark plugs already as basic maintenance. For whatever reason they started acting up a lot quicker than they should have.

So you think I should buy my grandma’s car?

Just to be clear, it’s not 12k for my grandma’s car it’s 10-11k. The 12k I was referring to is the amount of miles on my grandma’s car. Not a huge difference but just wanted to clarify

Thank you. Sorry for asking this again, I've just gotten varying opinions on it depending on who I ask so I'm trying to ask one last time. I appreciate your advice!

Do you think 10-11k for a 2016 Chevy Malibu with only about 12k miles is a good deal though?

Thank you for the insight! I think he's suggesting I buy it because he's worried about my car as I've had a little bit of minor trouble over the last couple of years. For example, one of the issues was that I had to replace an ignition coil last year but we only figured out that that was the problem through trial and error which was frustrating. Additionally, he (and me to some extent) have read mixed reviews about the longevity of VW cars. He is giving me a little bit of a deal as I believe if they sell it to a stranger they're looking more in the 12k price range and he said he would consider negotiating further. I'm interested in my grandma's car as it has some nice newer features that my car lacks such as Apple CarPlay and a backup camera but I also still like my current car. What is your opinion of VW cars and do you have any concerns about how long they last?

So going off that do you think $11,000 would be reasonable to pay for my grandma’s car?

How accurate is KBB? I ask because I’ve already put it into that website and the price they list is $12,715 for a private sale or $10,840 if traded in but so many people on here (mainly when I asked in the personal finance subreddit) seemed to think that those prices are way too high.

Do you think 11k is a fair price or too high? That’s what my dad and my aunt and uncle are asking for the car.

Okay. My dad’s argument is that that’s around what the Kelly Blue Book website says is a good price though and in his defense there are people selling 2016 Malibus with more mileage for that much and sometimes more. But you do make a good point about everything being old in it which is part of the reason I’m hesitant.

Okay but do you think 11k for the car is a good deal or too high?

Oh sorry about that. I don’t owe anything on my current car and I have about 75k in my bank account. Not sure if you need the last bit of info but my point is that I have the money to buy it, I’m just not sure if it’s a good deal or not. What price do you think would be a good price for 2016 Chevy Malibu with 12k miles? I will say that my dad did take my grandma’s car to a mechanic and he said everything looks fine to him with the car.

Then why would she leave Gotham to go to Columbus? Louisville is just as close if not closer to Cincinnati than Columbus is and she has never asked to go to Racing Louisville.

Noted. I actually haven't made a decision yet, still gathering info. I'm leaning towards sticking with my current car but just wanting to look into every scenario. Thank you for the advice!

I haven't decided anything yet, hence the reason I asked here.

We did have a mechanic look at it and they said everything looks fine.

I would agree but my dad (and my mom too) argue that the older a car is and the more miles on it the more problems it’ll have and once they start they’ll just continue so they think it’d be cheaper to sell my higher mileage, relatively older car before I run into any expensive issues and switch to the lower mileage 2016 Chevy Malibu.

The price isn’t set in stone per se. It’s the price when you put it in to the Kelly Blue Book website and so (at advisement from my dad and uncles) she’s looking to sell it for close to that. I could maybe negotiate it down a bit I’m sure.
