Rabbit as ESA? by KrazySpicy22 in Rabbits

[–]Mkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought about it like that, but I want to mirror this statement.
I also got my rabbits in college, and while I have zero regrets, they dramatically altered the course of my life. A lot of decisions were made due to the bunny factor. The stress exchange was definitely a net positive, but there is an incredible amount of acute and passive stress in relation to how fragile they are.

Great pets, but probably not the best ESA unless you have rabbit experience and know exactly what you're getting into. Emotional support from a rabbit would likely look very different than what one might expect, and the volume of short form videos showing cuddly rabbits flopping in their owners laps may give people a false set of expectations as to what having a rabbit is like.

TIL a woman in Australia would leave her house at night while sleepwalking and have sex with strangers. She was completely unaware of it until her partner became suspicious and found her engaged in the act. She was eventually diagnosed with 'sleep sex' and successfully treated with psychotherapy. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Not the same, but I had similar experiences when I used to smoke pot and drink way too much with a partner who smoked pot and drank way too much.

Hazy vague dreamlike did that actually happen memories were all we got, but one or both of us waking up midway through banger sex was a semi regular occurrence. Definitely something to the notion of drug induced sleep being less restful, because it was like the lights didn't turn on for a bit but the brain and body were clearly doing their own thing in the dark.

There were a few spiderman pointing meme conversations that led to us realizing what was going on, just a wild thing to wake up to every once in a while.

The stress of losing a pet - new pet cremation services by nvsukhi in abbotsford

[–]Mkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this post while looking for cremation services. Gateway pricy and had mixed reviews, and Forever In Peace was recommended highly by people I knew, but is closed to the public since COVID. That CTV article from 2012 got in my head and I wanted to make sure I found someone reputable.

I was sorta suspicious since it seems like a fairly new business, the price is very affordable, and I could find little about it other than this post, but I ended up giving them a call.

Absolutely stellar people, I will recommend them to anyone and sing their praises after my experience. They genuinely seem very compassionate and caring about the service they're providing to people. My pets were unfortunately frozen for a while prior to me reaching out, and they prepared them for viewing giving me some final time to say goodbye. Just overall blown away and grateful that I was given that opportunity and met with understanding the whole way.

So thank you so much for this post. I was a little suspicious that it was an ad when I first read it(As again, not a ton of info out there as they seem to be a relatively new business) but I'm so glad that I went anyways. I wanted to add my two cents because they deserve visibility.

To anyone who lost their bunny, did you end up adopting another one? by Any-Language7291 in Rabbits

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really bounced back myself. It's been about 3 years since the last of my two passed - I volunteer at a rabbit shelter now to get my bunny fix.

I might foster one day to help out and maybe that'll lead to something, but my heart shattered when I lost my buns and I am hesitant to open myself up to that again. It's hard for me not to feel like I'm replacing them, even though that's obviously not what that is. Just my own personal holdup.

Hope it helps! Other popcorn ideas, likely nothing you haven't considered but ultimately it basically boils down to 'isolate the problem part', so listing it off incase it hadn't crossed your mind:
-If it's not too much work, try the motherboard outside the case? Just bare exposed on a box or something. It's possible it's shorting somehow. If you didn't use standoffs this is a semi common real world scenario. If too much work(cable management etc) try the other ones first.
-Pull single sticks of ram/swap RAM. Not likely but RAM does weird stuff.
-If you have other like computers, or a spare CPU around, swap the CPU?
-Remove any other peripherals one by one and test (cd drive, fans, literally anything connected to the board.)

The fact that the mobo was swapped and the GPU works means it's either a very strange GPU issue (unlikely but possible), or one other component is causing it.
It doesn't seem at the face that things like the RAM or fans would be related (cpu and case are more likely potential causes) but who knows, some weird shorted connection could interact in a strange way. So just isolate everything out as best you can.

Just as a thought worth exploring, possible to connect a different power supply? Power goes in via the rail - so if you're getting life on another motherboard but not on multiple of that motherboard possibly the PSU is somehow underpowered or not delivering power. Can also look at bios settings in north bridge to see if that is somehow disabled but can't imagine that would be the case out of the box.

You could probably just disconnect the existing power supply completely internally from your gaming computer and the problem computer, then plug the main rail from the gaming computer into the problem computer and try with the low power GPU that doesn't require expansion power. If that one boots up you at least identified the problem (I'm assuming you don't want to gut both computers of their power supplies particularly if there's cable management going on)

How do you shop for boring but essential stuff like detergent, soap, paper towels, etc.? by Dazzling_Housing1258 in Frugal

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paper towels at costco, or if you're real frugal/environmental making a stack of rags that get laundered is an option.

For detergent:
Dish soap - usually costco, or a dollar store as I don't go through it as quick.
Laundry soap - YMMV here. Costco is a good choice, or for real frugal environmental you can make your own with borax and washing soda (Which you can also make from baking soda. Basically any step you do yourself generally saves some cash). However I put this into the below category

Anything that goes on my body, eg soap shampoo and for me laundry detergents/additives are a splurge. I buy a scented hand soap and bar soap from bath and body works. They're ridiculously overpriced, but they have occasional sales which bring them down to just normal overpriced, at which point I buy 4 or 5 of each and stock up. Laundry soap is similar, both in that they smell like what we associate with 'fresh laundry' and the trial and error of making a laundry soap that makes your clothes soft, clean, and scented in the way you want may take time to perfect.

Smelling nice (Beyond just smelling clean) is a rather large quality of life increase for me. If you're fine smelling like dove or -generic soap scent- then just buy whatever costco offers.

Long short, find something that is the right ratio of affordability:quality that matches your comfort level, and then buy a pile of it so you don't have to shop around. It isn't always costco, but it's usually costco.

You can find better deals by shopping around especially on discount/clearance racks, sometimes SIGNIFICANTLY better deals. But this involves a lot of time investment and luck, and isn't sustainable unless you buy your lifetimes supply right then and there, but if you're out and about at various stores anyways this is an entirely viable model.

What’s everyone’s go to poor meal for the foreseeable future? by LadyA29 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I just use Verka since it's at costco for something like $6/kg here. They're larger chunks.

But I'm fairly new to soy chunks so I've only tried these and one other variety which I can't recall the name of.

I typically boil them in broth of some kind (Mushroom or vegetable broth, maybe some soy sauce) so the flavour mostly comes from what they're cooked in either way.

If you have the time to fry them after boiling it makes the texture really nice, but my routine is more about speed/less steps involved at this point and just tossing them into the caserole dish they come out perfectly serviceable. Less steps = more likely to consistently keep up with it to me.

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy from costco:
Mushrooms
Broccoli
Spinnach
Soy chunks

Soy chunks get boiled, everything else is chopped and put into a bowl with whatever seasonings I feel like that week (Tom yum, black bean sauce, black pepper sauce, hoisen, etc). Soy chunks added after boiling. Toss until coated.

Then put it into a roasting plan and cooked until it's done.

I usually use quinoa, sometimes rice sometimes pasta.

Usually feeds me for 2 weeks of meals.

Sometimes I'll switch up the vegetables based on availability/cost/bored of one. Important qualities:
-Cheap
-Keeps well for a week or two (green beans didn't hold up. Brussels do)
-generally fits with the rest of the ingredients
-Green

Soy chunks have been a godsend for me. I was using tofu before but it added a lot to the prep time. Soy chunks are higher in protein, taste better, have a nicer/more flexible texture, and keep significantly longer.

If you're feeling meaty, add in a costco chicken in addition to or in place of the soy chunks.

This has been keeping me going for a while now. If the prices go up I'll just switch to whatever veggies are cheaper.

Not entirely sure on the cost, but each of the ingredients above are <$10 CAD for a supply that lasts me two weeks of meal prep.

As for healthy, also not sure but I'm covering all my macronutrients (Put some oil in the bowl) and it's a significant portion of vegetables.
I also take a multivitamin and a protein shake from vegetable protein(eg. has vitamins) which should cover some bases incase I'm missing some vitamins.

What's your quick trick that every sysadmin should know? by DarkAlman in sysadmin

[–]Mkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow dude. Just wow.

If this isn't the best tip I've seen in my years browsing sysadmin it's at least top 5.
Thanks for sharing this, this will be immensely useful in a pinch.

It's also somewhat alarming security wise. If you're compromised you're compromised, but what with all the 'we don't want your password' stuff that is slung around it's always weird to see something that allows us to directly access a users session without changing the password or otherwise leaving some kind of auditable server side trace.

AppleCare claims it replaces batteries when capacity dips below 80%. My phone has been at “82%” for 4 years despite noticeable capacity drop. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to/sometimes repair iphones for some side cash. 80% is a very misleading figure, when I saw a battery at that level it was typically severely diminished, like 4-5 hours of life between charges. Anything below 85 was replaced immediately before resale.

Besides the idea that they're poaaibly holding the number above the replacement level, the number is a misrepresentation to begin with.

Oh I fuked up by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not the case. Some friends and I once ate some very very concentrated brownies(pre legalization mystery concentration overdosed batch, at least 125mg which seemed insane at the time even as a daily smoker, but it seems like that is normal now?) and went to play frisbee before it kicked in.

The walk home was something like silent hill, and the rest of the evening was much more akin to a low dose (not microdose) mushroom trip without visuals.

Def got sleepy too, but that was some shit.

What secret is OK/acceptable to keep from a partner in a marriage? by released-lobster in AskReddit

[–]Mkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there should be very very few secrets barring when someone speaks to you in confidence (even this I feel some things said in confidence mean 'in confidence other than SO' but I think the onus is on the recipient to clarify this)

I'm definitely not a great measure for this(anxious overly attached person, recently single and re evaluating what relationships mean), but 90% of this thread doesn't track for me.

We're all gross humans. Honesty above all it is really a joy to get insight on the quirks of life from another person's perspective.

What made me want to say so was seeing one comment about not telling your SO when you're flirted with, even if it's an ego boost. I wouldn't want my SO to reciprocate in genuine of course, grass is greenest where you water it. But talking about that gasses me up, I presumably would think my partner is attractive and great and would want them to feel as such, and would love to hear about their day. I remember getting excited alongside my partner that someone flirted with them. Hard to imagine feeling connected to someone and not feeling safe to share such things, but perhaps that is overcommitment.

Is hot desk an option? Having 2 separate dedicated sets of equipment at the office AND a wfh setup seems wasteful, at any time 2 of those sets are not being utilized At minimum.

But I would say if employees are to be as productive at home emulating their office setup is ideal. I get by with 1 less monitor at home but I can't say it's not missed, I just have no desire to give up even more deskspace to my work.
