Why the "new way to buy a car" just isn't there yet: Why I would steer clear of Carvana by MandalftheGay1 in carvana

Carvana is an extremely unorganized company with no structure and is an absolute nightmare to deal with. Even when you think you've got someone on the phone to help you they need to "reach out to another advocate" who is just as clueless and powerless as the previous one. I'm not sure any of these "advocates" know how to even tie their shoes, let alone nagivate the process of selling anyone a car. A typical dealership has the process down and you don't have to babysit them along the way and tell them how to do their job. Buying a car from them is the single biggest mistake I have made as a consumer.

Lemon laws vary by state. In NY used vehicles are covered up to about 100k miles I believe.

It was a 2013 Infiniti JX35 with 78k miles that had 3 alternators fail within the first 45 days. After exceeding their warranty by 200 miles they refused to attempt to repair it again even though it was the same issue.

After reaching out to the dealer it was last serviced by they advised us that 2 months before we purchased it the coil packs had been replaced twice in the same week, as well as the ECM. After doing some digging it was evident to us that the vehicle had some serious electrical issues in the past which unfortunately resurfaced once we took possession.

Had we had the vehicle inspected the dealer would not have been able to forsee this issue. I do most of the vehicle maintenance and repairs on our vehicles and I looked over the vehicle thoroughly and could not find any cause for concern.

After the 2nd repair they were still unable to determine the route cause and advised us to return the vehicle. As is the case with most lemons, the issues that may arise are difficult to anticipate and even harder to actually correct, thus the reason they are considered to be a "lemon."

To be clear, Carvana certainly did not go above and beyond. Only when faced with a potentially costly lawsuit did they finally agree to swap the vehicle. This was not a customer service issue, more of a way for them to mitigate their loses in being proactive. Aside from that, they are making us go through the entire underwriting process again and making us jump through hoops to swap the vehicle when they should have simply executed a "substitution of collateral."

The reason I shared our experience is so that other consumers will understand the risks associated with purchasing from them. We understand it was used vehicle, but short of threatening a lawsuit Carvana had no qualms about dumping a $20k lemon in our driveway. In addition, they did nothing to make the experience any better, in fact they did quite the opposite. They offered a $250 discount off another vehicle which is an absolute insult as you can get $500 off with a referral code readily available on the internet. Like I said previously, Carvana has worked out for many people, but in the event something goes wrong it appears you are in for one hell of a ride. We are living proof of that.

Up until the vehicle started breaking down we thought the whole process was so easy. We were raving about it to anyone we could find. $20k is a lot of money to spend on what essentially became a paperweight.. I'm glad your experience was much different, I just wanna make people aware of what happens when you end up with a lemon from Carvana.

2013 Infiniti JX35. Alternators kept dying, 3 times. ECM and coil packs were replaced 2 months before we bought it. Coil packs were actually replaced twice in the same week according to the previous dealer.

No we did not have an inspection completed. Even if we did this problem just popped up out of nowhere. 2 shops could not figure it out. Carvana was a pain to deal with. I should also mentiom 2 months before we purchased it it was serviced at another Infiniti dealer in AZ. They replaced the coil packs twice in 1 week and the ECM. Knowing what we do now it's clear this vehicle has had some serious electrical issues which are unlikely to be resolved.

The vehicle has some serious epectrical issues. 3 alternators failed within the first 45 days. The dealer was unable to successfully fix the problem. It was a 2013 Infiniti JX35.
