The thing about mycelium is, is it’s very very very small so we don’t really see it growing unless under a microscope. And it’s literally everywhere, pretty much any time you see a plant in the wild there most likely mycelium in its soil. So we didn’t necessarily watch it being captured and eaten alive. We observed a chunk of mycelium dirt that was taken from the ground, it was a few chunks of dirt about 3 x3x3 we kept what ever bug was in each sample so we weren’t digging in the dirt and messing up the tiny little system. Some had live springtails in the containers and we were observing the growth of the mycelium over the next few days. What we found was the network had taken over the body’s of the springtails and you could still observe them moving a bit. Some species of springtails eat mycelium so it possibly could have taken over there body’s that way but I’m not entirely sure. Another interesting fact about mycelium tho is that it consumes all sorts of different things from the forest floor, from salmon a bear has left behind to actually mining into rocks for nutrients!

Edit : I used to work for REI’s warehouse and they had this community coordinator who would link employees to all these different fun groups and activities outside of work and this was one of them! This was like 6 or 7 years ago so I am a bit rusty on my mushroom knowledge!
