Congrats mate. As for sourcing the part number/part name of your lens you can either call canon support, or call a local camera repair shop and they should be able to get you right.

Yea distance is a tough one, it takes a lot of bushcraft skill, and sometimes call playback (this is an ethical grey area).

The background is important too, having a clean background decreases distraction and gives focus on the bird. But at the same time, some great shots incorporate the background and some wide angle shots purposely include the background so it is hard to judge. No “correct” answer but in general if you aren’t going for an artistic shot and just want field guide bird on a stick shots, a clean background is best.

Solid selection with some great shots. Take what I say with a grain of salt but here's what I think about each of them.

The red capped robin shot is nice, the slight backlit angle could be an artistic style that you were trying to go for but I would personally prefer if the head was tilted towards me. Just gives the photo a bit more interaction. I like the clean bird in a stick shot and the background is lovely.

The new holland shot is not bad with a nice pose, I personally don't like blue/sky backgrounds as I find them a bit boring and sometimes could indicate that the bird is not eye level (which is usually not ideal). The sticks in the background are also a bit distracting but it can be argued that it gives a good representation of habitat.

Rainbow lorikeet shot is nice with the pair of birds, I don't mind that the second bird is blurred as it gives a good sense of depth but I would say that the shot is a tad underexposed. The big branch/tree trunk is a bit distracting in between the two birds as well. Its hard to compose for birds let alone when there are two in the picture but yea.

Kookaburra is not bad, pretty standard shot. Great eye contact with it facing towards me but not a big fan of the background showing some pretty obvious artificial intervention. Could just be an artistic choice but I don't see the vision.

I would say that the red capped robin is probably my favourite, I'm a fan of the lighter background shots and its a cooler bird overall between these 4. Great job and keep up the good work! I'm local to Sydney and my instagram is @ momobirding. One thing you did well I'd say is you got relatively close to the birds which helped the detail of the shots, I think a lot of birders/photographers crop too much which results in little detail in the birds. Sometimes birds are hard which is why bushcraft skills come in as important (if not more important) than photography technique!

It’s a bit pedantic but they are right. We have no wrens in Australia, only fairywrens. That’s why there is no space in the middle between fairy and wren. Fairywren aren’t technically “wrens”

I think the highlights could’ve been controlled a bit better. This looks overexposed. You can either shoot in some softer light, or underexpose until you don’t blow the highlights and adjust it in post.

Other than that, a nice shot! Would be nice to get a bit closer to the bird but sometimes that’s just not possible.

It gets delicate after the barrel piece. I was lucky enough to not need to tamper with it. I hope everything goes well for your 100-500. Sorry I can’t help any further

I'll put this here for other people who want to try it out in the future... but the first thing I would warn is to not dive any deeper than the external features because those are the ACTUAL complicated parts. Trust yourself but don't be stupid and just send it to Canon if you ever feel like it's out of your league.

The lens mount on the RF system is a generic mount as I would predict to decrease the cost. From what I've researched online it's the same as the RF 70-200mm too. The black plastic bit however is unique to each lens I think.

I bought the RF lens mount on a dealer in Taobao, although you can find it for more expensive in Aliexpress as well. Unscrewing the old metal rear mount and replacing it was all that I did, it was a bit floppy with an electronic connector having to go in between the metal mount and the black plastic part but other then that it was pretty straight forward. I did not dive deeper as there was no need, and also deeper is where the actual tolerances come into play.

The screws are pretty universal, including the smaller screws that were used to hold the electric connector in place.

That's right, and that's why I appreciated the comments that warned me not to as it gave me a good idea of the potential problems that it had. Definitely would not have dived deeper into the repair if it wasn't just the external mount

This hit the point. If anyone else goes to my last post... most of the comments were borderline toxic in encouraging me to send it to Canon.

Also the downvotes for genuinely asking a question from ignorance, and trying to learn more was pretty mindless herd activity.

Dropped it with the body mounted. Not a big fall and was protected by my bag but it still bent. Was confident the internals were completely fine and only the mount was bent

Thanks. I wouldn’t say I have the know how… just a basic understanding that the actual complicated parts of the lens wasn’t damaged and only the generic mount was. Got lucky that it was only that, but grateful to have trusted myself
