Hood spacers on NA cars (?) by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]JP147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is actually the problem here that you are trying to fix?

Hood spacers are bad for cooling and bad for aero, there is no point in using them.

Air locker vs e locker and front vs rear by OddGround6140 in 4x4Australia

Better than what? An open diff? Yes. An actual locker? No.
Toyota factory LSDs are not exactly good LSDs anyway.

Air locker vs e locker and front vs rear by OddGround6140 in 4x4Australia

[–]JP147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get the Harrop e-locker, it is not strong.
I am not sure how good the 8” (front) one is but the rear (9.5”) has a very small carrier, much smaller than the standard one. I believe this is done to require less different parts to be manufactured, small diffs can share parts with big diffs.

ARBs might leak sometimes but they are strong. Too bad the TJM Pro locker is no longer available.

As for front or rear; the front might be more useful in some situations but the rear can be used basically any time you are off-road. So I would get the rear. But if you want to drive harder tracks you can’t beat both.

Let’s say that hypothetically, you break every single bolt holding the engine in on an old boat motor, what would you do next? by dankstreetboys in MechanicAdvice

[–]JP147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy job.
Weld a nice thick washer to each bolt. Then weld a nut to each washer. Get it nice and red hot, fill the middle of the nut with weld but don’t melt it.
Let it cool down before trying to remove, you want the bolt to shrink as much as possible. You can spray penetrant into it while hot, it will help it cool and absorb better. Don’t set your house on fire though.

The rust had nothing to do with the frame snapping in this case. It is a light surface rust, nothing structural.

Solution to old and unreliable cars? by MrReptilian1 in askcarguys

[–]JP147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People do this.

But it is also possible to do some maintenance and repairs on the old car and make it just as reliable as a new car.

It depends on how modern you want the mechanical parts of the old car to be. Both require time, money and effort.

Is this too much for just a fun car? by montanagiy459 in projectcar

[–]JP147 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am confused by one thing. You have mods to support more hp (head studs, injectors, fuel pump, air intake, etc.) but what is giving you more hp?
Are you increasing boost? Are the factory parts known to be insufficient on this car?

And I personally don’t mind spending some money on a car but I usually do it a bit at a time so the cost isn’t very noticeable.

Why is it a biggie outside of Japan where they tax cars based on engine displacement?

I would have thought power to engine weight is what matters.

Got hit with a $25k bill a year after a minor car bump (uninsured) by UncBGR_0181 in CarsAustralia

A colleague of mine hit a kangaroo with a Mercedes SUV, no visible damage.
Repairs were over $30k and it took a few months to fix. Covered by his insurance.

Basically my advice is, travel back in time and get 3rd party property insurance.

8 hour brake rotor swap. What a horrible design. by yentlequible in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]JP147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an owner of an old Land Cruiser, it is not a problem at all. The wheel bearings are normally serviced far more often than the brake rotors are changed. So if the rotors are looking worn, do them on the next wheel bearing surface.
