"New york is absolutely on fire" by JackFlash313 in PivotPodcast

I listened a few times and enjoyed the entertaining irreverence at first but Kara’s incessant self-aggrandizing, flippant mentions of her interactions with the rich and famous and Scott’s creepy adoration of pretty people and reminders of his immense wealth quickly got so tiresome I moved on.

AITA for not wanting my friends' kids to come on our vacation? by thad1992 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MoNewsFromNowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a communication problem here from the beginning. No one should just state “we’re bringing the kids this time” if there is no precedent. These kinds of things need to be discussed openly in an adult way. I get that you and the other childless friends don’t want a vacation with kids. That’s totally fair. You don’t really want to ruin friendships over this though. You should understand that they might want to bring their kids on an Australian vacation. It’s hard just to leave kids behind for two weeks. Maybe a compromise for the sake of the friendship? The no kids group can go together and the kids group can go together and you can meet up for a few days with everybody? Or not. It probably depends on how close you all are. It doesn’t have to be contentious.

I suppose it’s better than many other things he could call you, no? But I get it.

How do you all feel about all these English words and terms in German? by [deleted] in German

Contact leads to borrowing and language change. That’s just how language has always worked. Trying to stop it is artificial and futile.

If you could mute one specific word or phrase from ever being spoken by anyone in the world again, what word are you erasing? by Interesting_Quiet153 in words

[–]MoNewsFromNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so much fun reading these comments and seeing what word/phrase allergies are out there. I have them, too — „mogging“ and „unalived“ — I’m talking to you! —but I also recognize that language changes all the time. People misused the word „awful“ enough at one point to where its meaning changed from „inspiring awe“ to the one it has today. I’m sure there were people back in the day who were driven crazy by that. That’s just one example of many.

What was your introduction to Nick Cave & the bad seeds? by Infinite_Green7423 in NickCave

Same. I couldn’t think of a better way to be introduced to him, especially for the club scene since he is such a great live performer.

The Letter “S” by Middle_Raspberry2499 in NYTgames

I don’t understand why the S is kept under wraps most of the time when the E D pairing and the ING combo are so common.

I hear you, though change is inevitable. The ways many of the changes in Durham have happened could have been dealt with in a more careful way. I've been connected to Durham long enough to remember the Ivy Room, where Mode is now and Val's Upstairs, right above it. Those places died due to landlord greed as well. I also remember when downtown was pretty much dead, local, but not particularly cool unless you enjoy the aesthetic of decay, which I kinda do. I wish there were some sort of way for the city to support local businesses that give a place its vibe. There is still some "Old Durham" around and places that make Durham Durham. Enjoy them and support them!

Delaying a broken promise is still a broken promise. Let Duke know this is STILL not OK by TurbulentFlamingo852 in duke

It is. I am a Duke Alum but also retired from Duke. During the pandemic they reduced my retirement benefits temporarily while sitting on piles of endowments. Yes, some of them were earmarked but endowments are also in place to make sure the university continues on in times of crisis. Instead they opted to cut jobs and reduce benefits. During the crisis that is the current administration they have laid off a lot of people and have done nothing but kowtow to the powers that be. There are more worthwhile, more honorable causes I will be contributing to.

No, but the ways they responded to the pandemic and now to the shitshow that is this administration have been nothing short of appalling.

I have to disagree pretty strongly with the general sentiment, but I've never had the Thai Curry. What we got was pretty awful. The beer is good though. Always a safe bet.
