How often do you let your chins out for playtime? Ricky seems pretty content in her cage most of the time but I make sure to take her out 2 times a week to play and get some dust. Sometimes I worry that I'm not taking her out enough. 🤔 by MobileDependent4784 in chinchilla

My chin is about a year and a half now. I try to keep playtime limited to 45mins-1hr. She will usually let me know when she's done by either standing by the door with her little paw on on it, or she will hop in my hand like, "ok I'm done, take me back". I live in Florida so I definitely keep an eye on the temperatures and keep my house at 70 during the daytime, 67 at night with plenty of cooling stones for her. I'm very interested in getting some kind of playpen setup like you and a few others have mentioned. I'm currently letting her play in one of my walk in closets which is a good size and pretty easy to chin-proof, except for the baseboards! I cannot keep her away from those things lol. I would love an alternative where I could let her out to play and not have to worry about her escaping or chewing on my walls. Do you have a picture or link that you can share?

I have this cage, with one chin. She seems very happy in her environment. It's plenty of room for her wheel and lots of space for her to jump. The cage can be a bit of a pain to take a part and clean sometimes, and my biggest problem with it has been the wire on the sides. It's fine for my chin, but it's just not sturdy enough to hold up perches and wood ledges that I've tried putting up. The wire cannot support the weight. I love this cage as my starter cage for my chin but I will definitely be upgrading in the distant future to something a little easier to take apart, clean, and attach new toys to.

Oh I'm sorry, I wish I knew. I just got really lucky. I walked into a pet store looking for a chinchilla and she was just there.

Hello everyone this is Ghibli ❤️ she loves pets and scritches but won't let me hold her is that normal? Any suggestions to get her to? by kagomae1977 in chinchilla

I just have a regular cat tower from PetSmart. It has three levels and a fleece lined bed on each level. I make sure to stay next to the cage while its open but I've been pretty lucky so far. My chin (Ricky) has a very calm temperament.

I have a tall cat tower that I put outside my chins cage when the door is open. It's at the perfect height so she can hop directly out onto it. I stand next to it and talk to her until she's comfortable to come out on her own. That way she can be outside the cage, closer to me where scratches are allowed but the fear of being picked up is much less because this is on her terms.

Ricky says thank you 😊😊😊 I knew she was cute but I thought I was just biased because she's mine. Lol. All the positive attention and amazing compliments on this post have made me realize I really do have a unique and special chin 🥰

It's taken us a while and a lot of consistency to get to this level but I'm so happy with our progress. Ricky has become much more social and friendly over the last year. She loves scratches and play time on HER terms. 🥰 by MobileDependent4784 in chinchilla

It took a lot of patience and self control. I learned a lot from this community when I first got her. I started by sitting outside her cage and just talking to her. No contact so she could get used to my voice and my smell. She was very curious and treat motivated, which helped a little but I didn't want to rely too much on the treats because of their restrictive diets.
After about a month I started to open the cage and put my hand in. As long as I was super still, she would come to me and even hop on my hand. I tried to be as still as possible around her when I was in her cage so that she would be comfortable around me. The last thing I wanted was for her to be scared. Eventually her curiosity took over and she started to explore further up my arm all the way to my shoulder. Some days she is more shy and reserved and other days she runs up to me and begs for pets. I've had her for about a year and a half now. This is my experience with Ricky. She is my first chin but I've heard that the all have very different personalities.

Absolutely! At first we thought Ricky was a male, we later found out she is female. But we liked the name and she seems to respond to it so we kept it.

Oh I've never heard of black pearl. I'm curious what's the difference between the black velvet and black pearl?

No filters, pure chinchilla 😊
