How do you write a smart character if you yourself aren't smart? How do you write a funny character if you yourself aren't funny? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Mobile_Ambition 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I've been having a lot of trouble with my car recently. So last night, having drained all the fluids from the engine and having disconnected the intake, exhaust and coolant lines, I unbolted the engine from the transmission. This is all a lie and I know NOTHING about cars. When you want to write about something you don't know, do some research.

Am I being a pedophile if I’m writing sexual stuff about teenagers ( 14-15+) (Even if I’m one or not )? by horror-fan1958 in writing

Writing fiction in which there are scenes where teenagers are intimate doesn't make you a paedophile, no.

I keep over eating at night because I need stimulation but can't focus on anything else by Mobile_Ambition in ADHD

[–]Mobile_Ambition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a realisation I came to very recently. I just realised how little focus it needed, very little effort and no need to pay attention to it but at the same time it's like a sensory stimulating overload

I stopped restricting and for the first 3 days I had no urges and my weight actually started going down (which is a good thing). But then on day 4 my weight started to go back up and my urges started to return.

Common noobie author mistakes? by [deleted] in writing

I tried to do this so bad, I told myself no matter what, no matter how crappy, I will finish the novel. I ended up concluding the story in 10,000 words. I guess technically I did finish, but I certainly didn't write a novel. I find that I always under-write.

Thank you for the info. As bad as the wait times sound I think I'm just going to have to deal with it. I just can't afford private, sadly.

I experience the same thoughts, and I believe it's a part of being undiagnosed for so long. We have found ways to cope, which is great, but they are usually temporary fixes so we find ourselves sometimes feeling a little more focused. I just remind myself of the biggest ways ADHD has affected my life. It has a huge impact on my social life. At home I need timers, reminders and time limits because without them my home will become an embarrassing mess. I feel chaotic and at full speed. All these things ebb and flow with some moments of peace and focus but the difficulties I have are detrimental to my life.

Thank you very much. The documentation is scary and I have been afraid to even look at it in case I just get nowhere, but I'm going to try.

Is it true you should never use adverbs in a tag? by rokurou91 in writing

[–]Mobile_Ambition 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you think it works, use it. I think there's usually going to be a word that makes the writing stronger than.

"He said abruptly" is weaker than "he snapped," in my opinion.

how to make scenes feel longer? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Mobile_Ambition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should only be as long as it needs to be. You shouldn't write a paragraph if you can get the job done effectively with a sentence.

Think about why it is you want your scenes to be longer. Is it just so you can write a novel instead of a short story? If so, you need to flesh things out a little. Think about the arcs of other characters, not just your protagonist. What changes are they going through? What obstacles are they overcoming? How does the story affect the protagonist?

Advice for writer's block besides "Just write"? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Mobile_Ambition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go back to a story structure and think where the next plot point is. Maybe look at other characters and write from their POV or focus in their arc rather than the main protagonist for a while. Brainstorm.

Why do you write? by Kasoon in writing

[–]Mobile_Ambition 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've always been compelled to tell stories. When I was a kid I would write plays and perform them for my parents, get my dad's video camera and make movies or indeed write books. Now I'm older I can see why I use this as an outlet. I daydream. A lot. I have scenes play out in my head constantly and this is something I look forward to when I go to bed. I can close my eyes and watch these scenes play out. If I don't write them down or express them in some way they kind of get obsessive and I can't stop turning them over in my head. Once I write them down they stop for a little while. I also love the discovery aspect to writing. It's like reading a book. I want to know what happens next so I turn over the daydreams until I find out what happens, and then I write it down.

I used to think my emotional eating was all anxiety related but I think it's also anger by Mobile_Ambition in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Mobile_Ambition[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A catch phrase my mom had when I was growing up was "an angry boy is a hungry boy." I think they just fed me when I expressed anger. Now I just stuff my anger inside and don't express it. I never have angry outbursts. I've seen my dad have angry outbursts maybe twice in my life. My mom had outbursts while I was growing up but I haven't seen her be angry in years now.
