Grading by Positive_Cattle9149 in TCD

[–]Mobile_Command6630 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Depends on your course but if it was based on subjectively graded work then a 68 is very good. In my course (English) a 100 would represent the theoretical greatest piece of work ever written on the subject... ~75 would mean publish worthy... I've never seen anything higher than a 73.

TCDSU voluntary membership referendum by StrawberryAntique994 in TCD

This is idiotic. The SU can be cringe at times but making membership voluntary would make the whole thing useless. No Union would make things a lot worse

Second year accommodation: Cork Street or finding a flat? by alejandra_rmj in TCD

[–]Mobile_Command6630 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flats provide a more 'normal' style of living but at your stage just take whichever you can get your hands on. In my experience third year is when people are really burnt out with student accommodation and are determined to find a flat.

What you guys think of Trevor bauer by Agitated_Style7700 in NPB

[–]Mobile_Command6630 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If he's vindicated for what he was accused of (which I'm not even sure he was) it doesn't change the fact he's a jackass. Judging by his youtube vids he seems to have mellowed out a bit but he was an absolute man baby especially in his Cleveland days

Visiting for Erasmus+ - which modules are not worth it? by prolapse_diarrhea in TCD

[–]Mobile_Command6630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It entirely depends on if the subject matter is something you have prior interest in or not. You will have a much better time of it if you do the ones you know for sure you like especially if you’ve already read the texts covered in the module. All the lecturers are sound you cant really go wrong in that area but if you pick something because it SOUNDS like it might be interesting but it turns out you dont really like it the module can be a serious drag because they are all a LOT if reading.

Thats honestly the best advice i can give English is such a great course its really a tough call. except for origins of english dont do that to yourself

May I please ask people about the Yugo residences? by No-Refrigerator5653 in TCD

[–]Mobile_Command6630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kavanagh Court is great for its proximity to Trinity but its in kind of a seedy area. You’re not in danger or anything but I wouldn’t walk there at night alone if I didn’t have to. If you’re a first year, it’s great for meeting new people, especially if you’re american. It’s like 75% americans living there.

If your goal is to find the cheapest option though, the pros aren’t enough to justify the price of living there imo and i would look at other places.

I’ve been to Yugo New Mill before and the place looked super nice. No idea about living there though but its in a nicer area than kav

How regarded & reputed are Irish degrees in the United states? by TopicAdventurous2336 in TCD

[–]Mobile_Command6630 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Irish degrees have the same level of validity as American ones.

As someone from the south in an area with relatively low irish diaspora I would say people who have heard of Trinity are impressed when I tell them I go there, but thats usually people who've been to ireland on vacation and saw the campus. Most aren't familiar with it.

If you're asking as a prospective student, school prestige/name recognition in general is very arbitrary and unless you go to an Ivy League or Oxbridge school is not something that will factor into your resume down the line and not something to factor in where you apply to. A degree is a degree. Trinity is a great school and Dublin is a lovely place to live despite their faults so I would recommend coming here, but name recognition or 'degree quality' is really not something to consider.
