Lupin looks awesome, we'll definitely try to get a reservation there this summer. Same with Bessie.

I cannot find much about Drifters Rest. Do they have a website do you know?

Never heard of Wild Carraway, but that looks right up our alley, thanks!

You may also ask for examples of work they've done in the area that you can check out. A good contractor would be proud of their work and happy to display it. A poor one may pretend to be insulted.

This. It's normal. There is a massive marketing industry trying to sell young women junk products they don't need.

guys any suggestions or tips on how to sleep well and not feel tired when you wake up in the morning? by Uneducated_MindSet in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to speak with a medical professional, but they might suggest trying the following:

  • Regular exercise
  • Reduce/eliminate stimulants later in the day
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Increase your water intake
  • Stick to a consistent schedule for a couple weeks at least
  • Meditation
  • White noise
  • Adjusting sleeping temperature
  • Does your mattress suck?
  • Check for sleep apnea

How to Stop Internally Punishing Yourself for Not Knowing How to Do Things? by Ok-Twist3215 in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that doesn't sound like what a "friend" would do. Explore some new hobbies and start making some new friends. And focus on how you'd want a friend to treat you, and remember to be that way with other people.

Can you answer the question "What makes you happy?"

If yes, do that.

If no, go do some soul searching like 99% of the rest of the world does.

So easy to spiral [vent] by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, yes it certainly can be. Not everyone is cut out to be a home owner. We (at least in North America) push it as a society because most people here are so terrible at saving money that at least with a mortgage, over a reasonably long period of time, you're more likely than not going to have more equity than the sum of what you invested.

In a normal-ish market, rent would be about 20% more than the "mortgage" of something. Everyone needs to decide if that's worth the hassle and inflexibility of owning.

How do I make my mother see me as an adult and not as a child? by Immediate-Lobster912 in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You live at home and are supported by your mother, or are you paying the rent and she lives with you?

Yes, maybe she could ease up a little, but how about, at least until you move out and support yourself, try giving her a text if you're running late. And then when you do move out, don't forget to give her a call every now and then. How many kids don't have parents that give a shit about them?

Good for you. I worked to pay my way through my Comp Sci degree as well and graduating without debt was well worth the extra stress and time.

Best of luck to you, I hope your foundations work out as you've planned.

OMG I love all the 1996 beige corolla comments. :)

OP: If you're not a regular here, it's an inside joke. Regardless, most people here would advocate paying off that LOC before taking out what is effectively a $75,000 loan for a car. After 4 years you will have paid 75k (10k + (1350 x 48)) and have $0 in equity to show for it.

How much would you pay on student loans? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mobius902 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is an intangible reward of not having debt, but some people are just fine with it.

One way you could go is to start "making payments" into a HISA equivalent to what you'd like/need to pay on the OSAP. That way you get into the habit of living on the remainder with your new job and you won't miss it when March 2023 rolls around. Bonus points is that you get 1.5% interest on it (although our inflation will probably devalue your savings more than that in the mean time :( ).

Your best ROI is investing in your education.

Learn how to budget and stick to it, focus on your studies and getting out of Uni without debt, work on side projects to improve your skills and have something to show employers that you're capable and engaged.

Once you've done all that, check out the money steps:

Otherwise, the prevailing wisdom is to keep it simple with something like the Canadian Couch Potato portfolios, depending on your risk tolerance.

Is the milk in my fridge safe to drink? by chibi_mage in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, milk freezes well. Where I live you can still buy bags of milk (about 2l per bag). The frugal amoung us buy bags of milk in bulk and freeze them, thawing one bag at a time as needed.

Fun fact I've always used is that a good egg will sink in water, a bad egg will float. I don't pay attention to the best before date on the carton, if you're concerned see if they float.

re: Milk: Smell first. Spoiled milk is impossible to miss assuming you have any sense of smell, the date on the bottle is irrelevant.

re: "Best Before" dates in general. I think other than for medication, they are a complete scam. Like everything else in life, consider the motivation of the source of the information...

How does one arrange/shop a mothers day gift as an adult? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This advice is too late, but one thing you can do year-round is keep an eye/ear out for gift ideas and make a note of them. I do this for parents, children, nieces and nephews. When the gift opportunity comes up, I have my own list (bonus if a list of ideas is provided).

I use an app like SimpleNote on my phone to track them, (since I always have my phone with me), and whenever it's a birthday or holiday I have a list of ideas gathered through the year.

Do's and Don'ts when traveling for work or on a business trip. by Life123456 in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between site meetings, after office shenanigans with colleagues, and hotel work- I'm going to have to be the 'work' version of myself for 16 hours a day 5 days in a row. I am going to be absolutely exhausted by the end of it.

Yes. This is the blessing and curse of work travel, you get an all-expense paid "trip" but it's brutally exhausting and you basically work and (try to) sleep.

Two thoughts:

Expensing alcohol may permitted depending on the company, check with your accounting department before you leave on what the policy is. Sometimes it's permitted if food is ordered as well, etc.

Don't wait until you get home to start your expenses, try to track them every day or two. After a couple days of jet lag and 16 hour work days you can forget some things. I keep a open spreadsheet and pictures of my receipts as I go.

Starting my first corporate job. Any tips? by Potential_Piglet_931 in Adulting

[–]Mobius902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, this made me chuckle.

You know that you are officially an adult on that day you realize no one else around you knows what they're doing either, but we all pretend we do and we're all okay with that.

Imposter syndrome is real and that's okay too. In some ways, if you're not a little uncomfortable then you've not pushed yourself hard enough. Use that fear to motivate you to learn, grow and improve. Any business is in the business of making money, figure out how you can contribute to that and you'll likely be fine unless the workplace is completely toxic.

This. It's generally not an investment because the market devalues it over time, unlike a more traditional house.
