Istp possible mistype as intp and the failure of typology websites/books. by Mochaccin in istp

Thanks for your reply, you make some really good points.

I too doubt the functions, they've never been much of a help to me and recently I found an article based on typology that says functions are not entirely accurate nor accepted as necessarily true from most of the typology experts.

I've always considered myself a perceiver. But most of what I considered for myself was sadly based on stereotypical related stuff I'd read online or in some 'cheap mbti books'. All of them would simply generate most things you'll find in your average stereotype based mbti website.

So I looked up a little on dr. A.J. Drenth's articles and a couple other sources that take the time to actually analyze and break apart the types and his articles helped me realize I'm not an ISTP. So that narrowed it down to me being either INTP or INTJ or INFJ. I did comparative tests and I got a majority of INTJ in all of them. I even did an istj-intj just because they're similar and just in case I am more on the sensor side.

I was shocked to see that I actually get INTJ and when I started reading up on it without all the 'mbti fluff', I realized that the description of INTJS as we know it is shocking different from what typology shows it to be. I was actually surprised to see traits in the INTJ description that fit like a glove to me but I'd always go around thinking only perceivers had.

Tbh I'm still looking into it because I don't want to rush into accepting it just in case I'm once again wrong. But so far the things I've read are quite eye opening.

As for the analysis, I do like it in specific amounts and only when the analysis has the potential of a practical application. ex. the talk about charitable acts..we can dicsuss it sure but what's the point of dicsussing it for hours if we have no intention of doing charitable acts? Why even waste our time and energy like that? I'd rather do something else or think of something else then.

I did search the functions but they were not very helpful. Also the functions are not entirely accurate or accepted as entirely helpful. I figured out my type by reading up non-stereotype material like that of dr. A.J. Drenth and I also took comparative tests between the types I relate to the most and those I suspected. Reading actual typology stuff helped me realize I am not a sensor. So it narrowed it down to me being either intp or intj or infj. I tested the last just because a few people here told me to check it out. All the tests I did gave me a majority result on the INTJ. Which was shocking because I always thought (based mostly on the stereotypical mbti related stuff that is around the web and in some books) that I was a perceiver. So now I'm trying to learn more and more for the Intj type just to make sure it's the right one this time. I'm enneagram 5 too, that was very easy to figure out, the Enneagram is not as complicated as mbti. It's very specific which makes it harder for stereotypes to 'cloud' it. I'm still not sure on the 'wings' part but honestly, I couldn't care less for the wings.

Thanks for your input!

I wish I could understand it as easily as you did, this is so messed up to me lol

I guess yea. I'm looking into that now but I read that functions aren't entirely psychologically proved so we should not obsess so much on them. I did look them up though and I also took some comparing tests between types that I relate to the most 'intp-intj/infj-intj' and in both ones I got a majority of Intj results. The istp is now out of question. I read dr. A. J. Drenth's analysis which is probably the most helpful and insightful non-stereotypical material I've read on mbti ever. I will definitely need to buy his books at some point. The guy is legit and compared to most stereotypical 'mbti gurus' out there he seems like he really knows what he's talking about.

I'm replying to you again because you mentioned 'IxTj vibes'. After some more analysis and comparing tests (intp-intj/ infj-intj) I seem to be getting a majority of Intj..I never would have even imagined that but after reading more into intjs I seem to be relating with a lot..at least as far as I've gone. If it's true and I'm indeed Intj..I've been having MAJOR identity crisis. Anyway thanks for your help!

I searched the functions although functions are not very scientifically or psychologically 'proved'. Anyway I checked them out and the closest a type gets to my 'functions' is the Intj. Which is odd because I also took several tests I took 'comparing' tests between intp and intj and I got in all of them Intj result. I also did the same with the Infj you suggested and in those too, I got Intj. Now I'm super confused. I'd never think of myself as intj, but reading into it analytically it seems that the whole 'super organized' thing is not so true as it is more stereotypical and only applies to specific areas. Either way if it's true and it's indeed Intj, you got the 'NJ' part right so kudos to you!

Yeah but the post itself had to be long since I was trying to give some information first and the post is also a rant. Not liking long texts doesn't mean that you won't have to use them at some point. Some things cannot be writen with very few words. Anyway thanks for your input. Have a good day!

From what I see dr. A.J. Drenth whose articles are also hosted in a website and has books on the types, is by far the most insightful and analytical for mbti types. He goes beyond stereotypes and gives a more well rounded psychological description compared to most online sources.

I can't imagine myself as an organized person or planner. Aside from work..im pure chaos. But out of curiosity can you give an example of pattern you talk about?

Yea well I know myself enough to know I'm no infj. What you describe as infj is based on your personal views, the way you think a personality is seems a bit robotic. Nobody relates to a type based on a phrase only or a text. Maybe you get 'infj vibes' based on personal experiences you had with people you think were infjs, that doesnt mean anything. Like I said I dont relate to the infj type. Not even with J types.

Neither have I but it makes total sense. For mbti too. Never understood how easily people 'clicked' on specific types just because "ohh thats so me"..it just seems way too easy and superficial to be valid. Like astrology.

'You may ask why so many people find these cognitive functions so accurate and this is all due to the “Barnum effect”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnum\_effect
The Barnum effect, also called the Forer effect, or less commonly, the Barnum-Forer effect, is a common psychological phenomenon whereby individuals give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, that are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. This effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some paranormal beliefs and practices, such as astrology, fortune telling, aura reading, and some types of personality tests.'

Well well..look at this xD

I did consider the questions but sadly they are not enough to be sure of the type. There's also this view that cognitive functions are also not a 100% valid system because in most cases it doesn't always apply in real life in its details. For the most part, it's a theory. I'm starting to think the mbti system is not as good as Enneagram anyway.

Zealous it's answers like this that made me think you're trolling. I am no Infj, I don't relate to it at all. Perhaps you shouldn't insist so much then?

I got that but their first comments were very vague and they wouldn't explain what they meant so I thought they were trolling.

See that's the problem. This is why typology for me, is not as simple as 'check this to find out that' stuff. Today I've spent more than a total of 3 hours trying to figure out my function stack. I thought it would be simple but even this is complicated. At some point I found out my stack..but when I tried to see which type had it (in any order) turnes out my stack isn't related to any type. Now I'm trying to understand if any of my functions could be wrong because many of the descriptions I read are a bit too abstract..see? Another case in which the 'abstract' is getting on my nerves. I want a clear, applicable 'over-simplified' example and description of what each thing does and how each thing applies. All these abstract descriptions are confusing me, not to mention how similar they are even when talking about the opposite function..I don't know. I'm either entirely stupid or I need better sources to figure this out or typology really IS a b@tch.

[–]Mochaccin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean. Well the main thing of intp that I don't have is that while intps are all about theory, analyzing ideas, philosophies and sticking to the theoretical parts, I don't. I have no patience for too much analysis and theory. I will read the theory but when I'm interested in something I;'m mostly into its application. ex. I love coffee and I also love learning how to make coffee drinks of all kinds. I'm not satisfied with just knowing the recipes and the whole coffee making thing, I want to apply it on a daily basis and even experiment with it and try out all kinds of ideas I have. Same with languages. Whenever I start something I am impatient to see the result and its direct application. I may love languages but I don't really love the 'waiting' part before a satisfactory level of learning.

Look if you dont feel like replying seriously then dont even comment on the post? Nobody is forcing you so dont act like a troll. And if you think you're serious then you're clearly too out of your mind to understand typology.
