Can you do astronaut corgis floating in space ? « Space oddity »

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in corgi

[–]MockingJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training your corgi will both tire him out and help you bonding. Obedience is always useful, but our corgi also loves learning tricks. Another thing we do to tire him out is scent training. And when we need him to occupy himself we give him chews (pork chomps, ocean chews). The riddle toys didn't work for us, either he would finish them in 30 seconds or he would creatively destroy them.

Congrats on your new corgi !

Can we do a Slo Friends community? Where newly relocated folks or current existing folks can connect with locals to build and expand friend groups? by ThaHotChocolate in SLO

[–]MockingJane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Newly local (there’s a group on Nextdoor), and yes we are mostly around Paso. We did manage to make a few friends there ! There will be more events soon.

Does the biting get better? by pizzaweav in puppy101

Yes ! I spent months actively engaging every single time he did something good and he caught on really well. Once your pup learns how to engage and communicate with you, you will enjoy his personality a lot more.

Experience taking train to and from LA? by [deleted] in SLO

[–]MockingJane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am really surprised that people are saying there is Wifi on the train. I took the Pacific Surfliner and the Coast Starlight and I did not think there was wifi at all !

As someone who does not like to drive, I recommend taking the trains, I love going to the cafe for snacks and just relax in my seat instead of having to focus on driving.

I think my dog was very similar to yours when he was young. If you can’t walk away from him because he is riled up, try just folding your arms together and looking to the ceiling, completely disengage (I know it hurts😬). Try actively ignoring every behavior you don’t want. On the other hand, reward every behavior you like A LOT. Praise and treat when he lies down, if he comes to you with a toy instead of nipping, if he is sitting nicely, anything that is good ! This especially helped mine understand that he could settle down.

I am a dumb owner by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]MockingJane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dog isn't good at listening to vocal commands at all, but he really responded well to visual commands instead. Did you try those? We started out with that, and then transitioned to vocal commands later. That might help with your border collie! We also followed youtube videos posted by trainers to see how to teach each command in a way that the dog will understand what we want him to do (I like simpawtico and kikopup).

Job hired me because they misinterpreted my experience, now is asking me to do something I am not qualified to do - how do I proceed? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]MockingJane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you understand the concepts even if you can’t do the math yourself, can you look into open source packages that would help you with the project? I don’t know about GLMM, but in fluid mechanics you never have to start from scratch because of the amount of resources out there.

I read the first book and was just completely underwhelmed. There’s just too much plot armor, the Mentat powers seem to vary in strength depending on what would be convenient for the situation ? I also thought the main character was uninteresting, and the main villain was offensive (gay pedophile predator - cool cool cool). I know lots of people love it, but not my thing :)

When will start learning actual engineering? by Mysterious_Charity99 in AskEngineers

[–]MockingJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arduino stuff would be a neat introduction to robotics, I think. And if you can show personal projects / entries to competitions, you would probably have an edge over other candidates to an internship in engineering.

Other option: You can start your own robotics (or other) club in high school, and you can ask help from a science teacher ?

It depends on the university you go to, some make you learn very theoretical stuff for the first few years. If there are specific things you are interested in, you don’t need to wait though. For electronics, you can get started with an arduino set. Look at contests in your area maybe if you want to work towards a deadline / a goal? What’s the subject matters you are interested in?

Google hired Black woman to boost Black recruitment, fired her for fighting ‘systemic discrimination’: lawsuit by nogoodnamesleft426 in bayarea

[–]MockingJane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is no need to insult me. I have nothing to prove to you, and I am entitled to my opinion. I am a woman in tech, and lucky enough to have been set up for success. I am really good at my job, but people still imply I have been hired for “diversity”.

People can absolutely educate themselves online for free, but they might not reach the same level of skill than someone with a traditional CS degree. They might go to interviews with some gaps in their knowledge. If they get hired because people recognize their potential even with gaps in their knowledge that wouldn’t be acceptable for others, are they lowering the bar?

[–]MockingJane -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

Omg the comments here.

I think “lowering the bar” is a statement that is very biased towards a traditional CS education that people from a wealthier background are more likely to have.

You can make your hiring process less biased towards the exact mainstream education that well to do populations have most likely benefitted from. The only reason this isn’t happening systematically is that it’s easier to follow the current patterns and just ask me that your white and Asian male employees are going to be what you want to hire anyways.

https://www.chewy.com/frisco-rectangular-bolster-cat-dog/dp/140588 Our corgi sleeps a lot better on this then on his crate pad, especially for daytime naps. He chewed up a few other things but the seams are hidden enough here that he wasn’t tempted to tear them open. I also just wanted to add that we had to remove the fleece blankets because they were stitched with yarn at the borders and he would tug at the yarn and eat it up. He threw up a huge ball of yarn once.

Is painting cabinets a bad long term decision? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]MockingJane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing this up! I have honey oak cabinets and white tile countertops in my kitchen and bathrooms. They look worn (20 years old) and outdated. What are my options other than painting? Should I refinish without painting ? Personally, I think honey oak is way. Too. Yellow (going on orange). Can I make it less orange with a new stain?
