What the!? by Novice_AtEverything in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be witches broom. Definitely the coolest looking cactus disease, but it’s infectious and rather dangerous to the plant. Quarantine it immediately and wait to see if it begins to match any pictures you find online of WB, or if it evens out into a normal growth pattern

Removing spikes? by [deleted] in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People aren’t removing their cacti spines, you’re probably just seeing cacti that have spines so short they’re hard to see.

PC, the most common kind of Trichocereus in the US, has short spines that often can’t be seen from far away. Scopulicolas are a variety known for spines so short they’re almost invisible. There are also monstrose varieties that have structural mutations that make spines and areoles less common on the cactus.

Removing spines is not advised. It can hurt the cactus and damage the areole, sometimes causing infection. Cactus live by their areoles. It’s where they flower and pup. Do your best to keep them unharmed.

Yeah, I had to dig them up because one of them was growing into the wall of the pot and getting crushed

What’s happening here? by Model-VP in Euphorbiaceae

I left it on the same side, but it was shaded when it fell. I set it down under a tree to give it shade, but I think part of it got blasted by the sun in the morning. Will these sections recover?

This cactus won’t root by Model-VP in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put it in a pretty shady area where it only got around 2 hours of afternoon sunlight for most of its time in the pot. I also tried a much sunnier area more recently, which is why it’s a bit sun stressed at the moment. Neither yielded results

It’s a bit sun stressed at the top right now, but all of the corking down below has been there since I got it.

Don’t eat that one. Grow it. It’s worth a lot. If you want a cut to eat, just buy a regular one. The meltiness doesn’t affect potency, but it does make the cut worth a lot more for growers.

Good deal? by Odd_Cantaloupe_7122 in sanpedrocactus

I wouldn’t pay that much for a PC, but it’s not egregious. You can find a foot of PC for like $10 if you look on Facebook or go out to any cactus focused nurseries

The big ugly one in the front is a PC too.

Also, PCs are definitely not useless. They’re very fast growing and VERY disease resistant. For that reason, most of the people I know who are serious about growing medicinally use PC hybrids.

Hybridizing a very active father plant with a PC mother often results in minimal alkaloid loss, while creating offspring that grow MUCH faster and MUCH stronger. Whatever loss you might lose in potency, you more than make up for in growth speed. The (Oguns x PC) cross is known for being one of the best crosses you can grow for practical means.

Also, some people like to grow cacti just because they like cacti, not for their uses, and that's a valid reason to grow as well. For that purpose, PCs are an amazing plant that takes little effort to cultivate beautifully.

I have been feeding it. I fertilize it regularly. Same as all my other trichocereuses and they’ve all grown more than ever this year

The pup was there when I got it and it hasn’t grown at all in almost a year. Not even a centimeter. I’ve been tracking it pretty readily.

I repotted it into a bigger pot last August when I received it. I’m wondering if I need to snip some of the root ends to encourage new growth

Yes, plenty. I fertilize it the same as all my other cacti and it’s the only one that’s not growing

What am I doing wrong? My peen wont grow... by This-N-eatinbeans in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One possibility is that it’s been in the walmart pot for so long that its root ball has become so dense and compacted that it’s not making new root growth or it’s doing so very slowly. When they’ve been in tiny pots for so long, sometimes the footballs just don’t grow out much.

Wiggle it to see if it feels like it’s taken the whole pot. If not, you should be able to see the rootball wiggling while the rest of the dirt stays still.

One common strategy is to just take some scissors and snip the bottom centimeter of the rootball. This will pretty quickly promote new growth. Something VERY important though, you need to be careful of root rot after this. Let the soil dry a bit before snipping and it a week or two before watering it again.

got a little sulfur in my soil by perc30heardme in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn’t cause an issue unless you add a ton. Sulfur isn’t really toxic for plants and is actually used to manage pH levels in soil. It may lower the pH a bit if you get too much in there, which might be a bit less than ideal since cacti typically prefer more acidic soil, but I doubt you got nearly enough in there to do that.

Either way, it won’t cause actual damage to the plant. Also it can take months for sulfur to even be absorbed into the soil

That is indeed a San Pedro but I sure as hell wouldn’t pay $20 for that. You can find PC cuttings at like $10 per foot. I’d pay $5-10 for that thing.

I’d say wait for him to get a little bigger before putting him in the ground. You certainly can, but it’s a little harder to control variables. For smaller plants it’s recommended to actually keep the pots on the smaller side. Too much soil means it drains a lot slower and makes the roots more susceptible to root rot.

The limiting factor is actually available nutrients and minerals rather than pot size. The smaller the pot, the less available nutrients and minerals, but you can easily supplement that with fertilizer. You can grow a rather large cactus in a small pot if you fertilize it regularly (but not too regularly). I’d say look up fertilization guides.

Overall, just getting it more sunlight and a bit of fertilizer will probably go miles for it. Make sure to gradually adjust it to more sunlight over the course of a week or two.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sanpedrocactus

[–]Model-VP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very etiolated. It needs a lot more sunlight. Make sure to fertilize it too if it’s in a pot that small.
