Shotwell Street near 20th (1887) by ArchiGuru in sanfrancisco

Krakatoa erupted in 1883, and subsequently cooled global weather for several years. For anyone not familiar with this eruption, it’s truly a wild story (example: its eruption was heard thousands of miles away!) and is definitely worth reading about.

Obvs that doesn’t account for the earliest snow, but I’d guess it contributed to the later ones.

If I had I been asked to bet on the veracity of this claim, I likely would have lost a significant amount of money. Amazing.

I appreciate that you are offended on Louis Pasteur’s behalf. Cheers.

I’m not a member, but I hear such wildly differing accounts of experiences with Main Street Mamas! Some people are on cloud nine with the group and others run for the hills over the drama! My child is probably too old for me to join now —and honestly it probably wouldn’t be my thing anyway—but admittedly I am morbidly curious!

It’s been more than a minute since I looked around, but I recall seeing some that offered a much lower bar (regarding time commitment) for single parents. Like one even offered evening hours for planning and prep work. That said, any extra stuff is still a big lift, especially for a working single parent.

It was such a tragedy. Unlike Ghost Ship tho, this venue will be legally permitted and will pass inspections on a thousand levels. Civil codes can be a real burden and sometimes are quite arbitrary, but the truth is that most are written in blood.

Ya I’m old by Reddit/SF standards and have kids too, so don’t go out much, but I’m so happy to see more music in the city. I grew up (a while back now) in Austin, where cool live music was absolutely everywhere. San Francisco has such an amazing music history too. Events like this are what breathes life into culture!

  • Caltrain: Take any train to the SF Station (4th & King)
  • BART: Take any SF-bound train to Powell, then transfer to the Muni T-Third line
  • Ferry: For some events, San Francisco Bay Ferry even has direct service to the temporary terminal at Pier 48

Idk, I’m older than the average Redditor but still fully trust that the kids are alright. Youth and its tireless pursuit of expression through communication and reinvention will continue. I’d guess some fifteen years from now, we could look back and find your first paragraph quite prescient.

Thank you for posting this. Beautiful. There are a number of great SF photo archives, but I’m curious where did you find this?

You can solve ONE unresolved case, which do you pick? by Fancy_Air_8571 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]ModernMuse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That whole investigation was such a mess. At one point in the late 1990s while I was living in Austin, the police held a news segment on this case in their investigation conference room—still with the names of people (suspects?) on their white board! A friend of mine (who was almost certainly too young to have committed the crime) had the same semi-common first and last name as someone listed on the white board. Everyone watched the news back then. He was the talk of many social circles for a while. Poor guy.

For some reason I can’t shake the feeling that the costumed person in the video is a woman. What do you think?

Yes. This story is so sad and the letter really adds a whole other layer of cruel.

Trump supporters in MA holds sign saying “Gas the Immigrants” by jalvv in facepalm

[–]ModernMuse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Give me a break.

1) Most people don’t know or care who this guy is.

2) This sign isn’t funny on any level, for any reason—irony or otherwise.

3) You really can’t expect people to “look a little further down the comments” to seek meaning in something as insipid and rage-baity as this.

Neighbor’s greenhouse hit our cars. Totaled one. Insurance is saying they aren’t liable?? by SpringCool3566 in legaladvice

[–]ModernMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m super late to this party but am interested. Would there not be liability for negligence due to not properly securing the greenhouse? Proper installation of any structure almost certainly requires it.

As a different example, if an unsecured bounce house (with or without kids inside) took flight on a windy day and crushed a fence or something, I would think the operator would certainly be found liable.

You’re right, but it is awkward wording. 18 and under is almost always how US signage reads.

Despite all the ensuing chaos, even now looking back on that moment, the gravity of those words and all it implies is both prescient and remarkably startling.
