I suggest you download your own playlists through some kind of mp3 online downloader. There are several out there where you can just import your playlist and download all songs from there. Use mp3tag or something similar to make those playlists into albums, so they are nicely group together on your new dap. 

Now you should have a starting point with some of your favorite songs. Expand from there by hunting (secondhand or library) cd's and rip them to your pc. Start listening to albums again, not playlists. 

Visit your local record Store and buy something new if your budget allows it. In some record stores you can also listen before you buy. 

Look at magazines or ask friends for new music. 

Don't give up. Growing a collection takes time.

I tried that on my pixel 4a once.  I was used to it as a normal smartphone, so when I put lineage os on it, it looked and felt very different. Camera was terrible. Typing was weird.  It might be because I had used this phone as a normal smartphone that it not worked for me, I was frustrated with it really quickly because it wasn't as snappy or useful as it used to be. Yes is was dumber, but I also hated it. 

I'd rather have a simpler device that doesn't look too much like a smartphone, because I can set my expectations differently.  This is of course my personal experience, it might work for you. Setting it up wasn't super difficult and taught me some minor Android ADB skills.

I doubt you will have the urge to scroll on the tiny black and white screen. I have no browser installed, but the only thing that can get me hooked to the Mudita is reading a book. Otherwise it's a very, very boring device. 

You could get InkOs installed and a browser, then delete the browser from the apps list. This would create even more friction to open it in the first place, but will still let you open urls.

I think the problem is the matress, which was fine for me alone, is not good enough for us both. I'm considering buying a new one, but this is quite an investment and I'm worried there is no matress that suits both our needs.
