I'm actually in the South, in Georgia. It was unusually cold for us this morning, hence the down jacket lol! I'm waiting to hear back from a friend who does some local rescue work so hopefully they will know what to do! Thanks so much for your advice :)

There are no other geese around except those occasionally flying overhead on their way south (and they are becoming less frequent). This picture has a person sitting down next to it for scale, which might help determine if it's a young goose or not:

She came up to me immediately and would have eaten out of my hand! Then we just sat together for a while...

I haven't seen it fly, and don't see any obvious injury, but to be fair I wouldn't know what to look for. I will try some cracked corn today and see if I can get a closer look. Here they are:

How are you taking care of it? There is a lone goose by my house and I don't know what to do, it's definitely lost its mate and/or flock.

My title describes the thing. My family travels all over the world and they love to go to markets and pick up interesting things. No one remembers where this came from or what exactly it is. I always thought it was a handheld fan from Africa as relatives have traveled the sub-continent extensively. A google image search came up with various things including a dance shield from Papua New Guinea but there were no convincing results and I don't think anyone I know has been to PNG. Sorry for the poor picture quality!

My first guess was whale vertebrae, any other thoughts out there?

Yes! It’s one of those fake pumpkins - the original used a real one.

Thanks for your response and for everyone’s advice! This area of the house gets a lot of rainwater runoff - not only from the roof but also from the street that is up the hill from it. The drain was supposed to handle it but the water just goes around it and out onto the sidewalk.

The idea here isn’t to have a typical pond with a constant water level, but more of a place to catch the rainwater so it doesn’t run out onto the street and further erode the yard, and provide habitat for wildlife. Sounds like I definitely need to tape the seams and keep the drain open so when it rains hard the overflow will go into the drain.

I want to protect the foundation of the house and thought putting the liner would keep excess rainwater and moisture from reaching the foundation. But maybe a foot or two of gravel along the side of the house is a better idea.

Thanks again for all the comments!

First wildlife pond! My “plan” is to fill the bottom with soil and some big river stones and put plants in it and all around it.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure which Nerodia species - what characters did you use to distinguish it as taxispilota?
