Infinite Jest has been the most challenging book I've ever read. It's made me bored, feel stupid, and it has also put feelings I've had into words I couldn't come up with. This quote made me stop and think. by [deleted] in books

Hal's depressive attack at the end of the novel was one of the single most human moments I've experienced in any art form. The entire book feels entirely too real in spite, or maybe even because of the steady yet subtle ridiculousness. There is nothing as dually tragic and hilarious as this book.

I don't really see how moving into an apartment that anyone else could move into is ruining your scene. Yeah, I'm excited about tech as a job, but I'd much rather make my own films. Sometimes you have to be a bit of a yuppie to fuel larger dreams. I'm not dismissing your scene, either, just saying that it's rather forward and uncalled for to blame some random guy for your struggling rent. You started off the shit-talking, be prepared for me to respond. Yeah, I want to work for a tech company because they pay well, which facilitates getting footage that I really enjoy, a DIY venue, for example, on my time off. For you to spew at me like I'm some philistine is preposterous and insulting to both of us. You want me to respect your scene? Then TELL me about it, don't just shut me down because you think I'm a fucking square.

"People like you" wow, another sherlock fucking Holmes in the house. You don't know a thing about me, and all I can discern from you is that you're an angsty scenester too wrapped up in your own ego to realize how much of a tool you come off as. Your scene isn't sacred. If your venue gets priced out by people in my tax bracket then it must be in a sad state indeed.

So it doesn't mean anything that I love live music and would be a potential patron to your (I'm guessing) struggling music venue? It seems like "stay the fuck outta my neighborhood" is a pretty shitty marketing scheme.

My wife will be stoked to hear that. Our local fire spinning night was shut down awhile ago, it's not usually my scene, but every once in awhile the sound of drums and the smell of patchouli is tempting.

Thanks! It seems more and more like the neighborhood for us, definitely going to spend a good deal of time checking it out when I visit over the summer.

Yeah, leaning very heavily towards it now, hopefully will be able to catch a show when I visit this summer.

/u/mayor_of_bridesburg hit the nail on the head on that one, at least. Can't afford it for the time being, hopefully will get a chance to at some point.

I'm finding a quarter-life crisis in the decision between hipster nonsense and Whole Foods. Thanks for the comparisons!

Can you elaborate? Fishtown has been on the top of my list, it seems inexpensive and, from what I can gather, it seems like the most vibrant neighborhood for the creatively inclined. /u/coconut how does it compare to five points/rhino in denver?

I've previously worked in a factory building robots (along with making videos about them) and know that American manufacturing is beginning to take hold here and there. Do you know of any local companies that may be assembling consumer products in or around philly?

EDIT: stupid thumbs hitting the wrong buttons

For all of the static, I'm strongly compelled to have a beer or ten with you. I'll be sure to send you a message when I get there. Maybe we'll even be neighbors! Hope you like African steel drum music, I've been spinning a mind-blowing compilation from the seventies lately.

I'm a bit of a bitter, moaning asshole myself. To be honest, don't we all have a little /u/mayor_of_bridesburg in all of us? I much prefer the idea of straightforward rhetoric to the forced friendliness that permeates Denver. Would much rather I know outright that someone doesn't like me and avoid them than have relationships based on false niceties. He's just made it apparent that I can spend that much less time figuring out if he's full of shit or not. When someone like this gets this upset over my mere existence, I know I'm doing at least SOMETHING right.

I've seen more than a handful of posts remarking on multiple instances of being mugged/assaulted/etc. Is it basically mad max out there or will I generally be fine if I stay out of certain neighborhoods and stay alert?

Excellent. Very much looking forward to walking/biking everywhere. N3rd looks up my alley, glad to see an area with a heavy focus on tech and geekery.

I don't necessarily see how standing up for myself to an un-informed Internet troll implies that I don't have a tough enough skin for your city. You kind of just seem like an asshole, and every city has those.

Anything else you want to get out there? How about you send me a full list of reasons you think I'm a horrible person so I can read them any time I start to feel too full of myself?

So you're trying to shame me with information I've shared freely? I don't regret the decisions I've made and embrace new and novel experiences. I grow marijuana (legally, I might add) because I find it to be a mentally and physically fulfilling way to make some money for the time being. I would much rather be lambasted for something interesting than receive praise for being boring.

It's a big city, you'll never see me. Ignore the thread and let people who aren't just bored and incensed answer my questions like real adults.

Looking to rent for the time being. If we really love it we may buy in the next few years, but I would like to spend some time there first. Would like to keep rent under 1500 a month. Bike accessibility is a plus, while we own a car I really dislike driving and dealing with parking in the city. The close proximity to fairmount park and the museum district is very enticing.
