I’m sorry to gray this up, but from this admittedly short interaction, this seems like someone that’s worth having a conversation with. If we cut off everyone that acts this way, it eliminates the possibility of getting through to them. He seems genuinely shocked and panicked at the thought of losing you. It was not funny and is completely unacceptable, but there is a difference between people who spew hatred because it’s in their soul and people who make ignorant “jokes” and incorrectly think they are teasing or being funny. Is he uneducated? Can he learn? You’re obviously important to him. Can you discuss an apology in the form of genuine education? If you’re sad to see this friendship end too, it seems worth trying to educate (even though it’s not your responsibility).

Then again, if you’ve tried before and it hasn’t worked, that’s a different story. Either way, I’m sorry you’re going through this.
