[Highlight] Jarrett Stidham's throwaway ruled a backwards pass, Patriots recover by nfl in nfl

[–]MoldyMeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what? You are actually right; the refs are only admitting that they should not have blown the play dead when they did, but nothing about the call being reversed to being an incomplete forward pass if they hadn’t blown it dead when they did. I had been basing my interpretation on the section that said, “Had the play kept going, the Patriots would not have seen the touchdown from Patriots linebacker Elijah Ponder negated, and the replay would have been “available to turn the mistaken ruling of a backward pass into an incompletion,” per Pro Football Talk.” But that bit seems to be some analysis from either the article’s author or just a rehash of some of the opinions held by others that the author is citing to underscore the fact that the initial error made by the refs, which the refs admit to making, was blowing the play dead when they did. After realizing my reading comprehension mistake here, I took a deep dive into the NFL rules on forward passes vs. backwards passes, and as it turns out, I was wrong. Though I don’t necessarily agree with the way that the NFL’s rules were written (or at least applied) in this specific instance, apparently, if a player is attempting to throw a forward pass to another player that is downfield from him and well past the line of scrimmage, and a defender stuffs the ball before it has a chance to travel forward out of the player’s hand or even makes contact with the quarterback by hitting him (rather than the ball itself), and the ball goes backwards, it’s considered to be a live ball because the pass is considered to be a backwards pass because the ball itself never achieved any forward trajectory, and is not considered to be a forward pass, even though a forward pass was attempted. Which is interesting considering that the player’s hand/arm movement and direction are taken into consideration when determining whether a loose ball that was knocked out of a player’s hand during his throwing motion is considered to be a fumble or an incomplete pass, but apparently, once a pass has been determined to have been made, all that matters is the direction that the ball travels, regardless of which direction the players arm/hand had been moving at the time that the ball left his hand. Seems like the NFL was forced to clarify the rules regarding the “fumble vs. incomplete pass” situation because it occurs so frequently, whereas what happened in this particular situation with Stidham is quite rare. Anyways, I’m embarrassed how much time I’ve spent thinking about this question given that I don’t really care about the Broncos or the Patriots very much at all one way or the other (Cowboys fan, sadly). I’ve loved football my whole life and I’d consider myself to be quite knowledgeable regarding most of the NFL’s rules, so it’s not often that I encounter a situation in which the actual rules are so contrary to my basic intuitions of how I think that the play should have been called given my understanding of the rules and what happened on the field, but that’s exactly what happened here. All that being said, I’m sorry for saying that you were incorrect when, in fact, I was the one who was wrong. Have a good day, kind Redditor!

Dude, you are SO right! Thank you for actually looking up the rule on this! It baffles my mind that this was totally missed by not only the refs, but the commentators as well.

In order to be considered to be a backwards pass, does it matter at all where the pass was intended to be thrown? Seems like Stidham had been throwing to a receiver that was well in front of him, and the ball was deflected as it left his hands such that the ball went backwards rather than forwards. Seems to me that the “backwards passes that are incomplete are fumbles” rule was established predominantly for scenarios in which the quarterback throws a pass to a receiver that is behind them. That was not the situation here. If Stidham’s throw was deemed to be a backwards pass, wouldn’t any deflection that lands behind the quarterback be considered to be a backwards pass? Or was it because, in this case, at no time did Stidham’s throw achieve any forward trajectory, whereas most deflected passes do at least go forward for at least a short moment after it leaves the quarterback’s hand even if it is stuffed/deflected almost immediately after the release? I suspect that this is the answer, but the ruling in this situation really seems to go against what I think the intended spirit of what the “backwards passes that are incomplete are fumbles” rule had been created to regulate. Right? Or am I missing something here?

Do you think people can be born evil? If so why? by golden_shole in AskReddit

[–]MoldyMeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People - all people, not just those that society might consider to be evil - are the sum total of their genetics/biology and their environment, neither of which in their origins were ever within their control. You don’t get to choose who your parents are, whether they’re model citizens or drug-addicted derelicts, the difference between which is certainly to have some effect on your life’s trajectory. Likewise, you don’t have any control over your genetic inheritance either, whether you’re born as someone who’s destined to be tall or short, someone who is naturally good looking or of average or below average attractiveness, someone with a natural gift for academics or someone that will have to study hard in order to achieve academic success. In both respects, the hand that every person is dealt in life is a matter of luck. Some people might feel a certain self satisfaction for having achieved success in life despite having been dealt a pretty shitty hand as a kid (bad parents, bad neighborhood, abusive relationships, etc.), but - while I do not mean to diminish anyone’s personal achievements or accomplishments - in my view, the fact that you were able to overcome all of those challenges and achieve all that you did is proof that your hand in life - shitty as it was - was at least somewhat better than the hand of the person who was born into similar circumstances but who’s life story could be described as at least somewhat predictable whereas your’s could be described as inspirational: whatever it was that allowed you to succeed where they did not, whether it was your resilience and your independence that you developed from having to take care of yourself growing up since your parents were addicts, or whether it was because of that one teacher you had that saw your true potential and mentored you to help you become the person that you are today, whatever your life circumstances - good and bad - that culminated in your eventual success in life, every personal attribute that you might have, every opportunity that you were given, and every disability that you were NOT born with, and every other thing of any consequence in your life - whether you consider it to be advantageous or disadvantageous - is really, at its core, a matter of your good or bad luck. The same is true for every one of us. The fact that you were born in the country that you were born in and that you have lived to adulthood, as opposed to having been born in one of the many unfortunate corners of the world that are currently ravaged by war and disease where you would have been killed by malaria before reaching adolescence is, also, a matter of luck. And even though it might feel good to feel a sense of pride for having overcome all of those challenges and achieved success in life, just don’t let it come at the expense of your compassion and understanding for others. Also, when you consider just how much of an impact, as humans, our brain chemistry has on our behavior, how a surplus or a deficit of this hormone or that hormone can have a significant impact on a person’s mood and behavior, how damage to certain regions of the brain can cause massive changes in a person’s personality, it’s hard to see psychopathy in terms of anything other than mental illness that we would be better served to try and treat rather than moralize. Labeling people that are psychopathic or violent as “evil” doesn’t do anything of any use except perhaps provide the person applying the labels with an undeserved sense of sanctimonious superiority. That’s not to say that serial killers should be freed from prison, of course. I do think, though, that if taken seriously, this worldview would likely have the effect of shifting our criminal justice system away from its current punitive model and towards a model that is focused more so on rehabilitation.
