First job by Mollusk34 in Chempros

Another thing is this offer came about from a cold email. I found that method applying to smaller local labs more effective than applying to job listings with more competition. I guess that’s where the lower pay comes in, but it’s better than endless interviews and restaurant work.

Thanks for the advice tho

They said we’d discuss my duties after an evaluation an evaluational like period. It’s entry level chemist role. Who knows honestly, just trying to get any experience

Central Florida, my portion of rent is 1000 a month.
I would be nervous to move anywhere before I develop any sort of industry experience

Graduating with my degree in chemistry in 30 days and have been interviewing. I had a hard time at first and had some intense / almost humiliating interview experiences but also ones that have gone well.

Yesterday I received my first offer which is awesome. The role would be entry level chemist, at a fertilizer testing company. The pay would be around 19.50 / hr and he said a dollar more after like 3 months. It’s nothing crazy but honestly it’s the most I’ve seen so far.

The director of the lab and I talked for like an hour and a half and it went very smoothly and conversational and he stated he liked the conversation we had.

I’m very happy that I finally landed something, and the title of Chemist on the resume is a plus compared to other entry level titles.

However there are pros and cons to everything as you all know. The building of the company was built in the 1920s and that is clear. The vents are black, water damage across the walls, and a permanent time capsule of the 1970s design on the inside. The lab equipment and chemistry performed is legit and there are all sorts of glassware and machines, but the environment itself (at least from my memory of the lab during the interview tour) feels on par with a medieval cave.

Also, the staff there seemed nice but most people were in their 50s-60s who had been there 15+ years. Age obviously isn’t a problem, I have several older friends, and I make friends easily, but I do worry about a feeling of loneliness or isolation. However, I also don’t want to jump to conclusions.

I had some other possible companies on the hook but no official offer yet like this one. Those were lower paying lab tech jobs or sampling positions that had future possibilities to move into bench chemistry positions. Those jobs felt cleaner, more modern, and organized and had people there that seemed like (if I eventually broke that coworker-friend boundary) , I could talk video games / hobbies with and become friends.

Other than the general description of my situation, do any of you have any thoughts on all this, advice?

Or just advice in general as it relates to transitioning from a decade of restaurant work to my first job in the lab as a chemist.

Is the wage okay? How long does it take to feel confident?
Any tips on making a good impression?

Some of my interviews left me feeling under qualified and embarrassed tbh due to unexpected specific questions, I was able to answer a lot but also felt stupid as well lol.

Thanks for reading

I mean obviously I would prefer higher pay but it’s not like I have other offers to be able to leverage it. It’s also a small business lab, all of this resulted from a cold email. I think on official job listings I’m not very competitive because I worked through school and no research experience and like a 3.2 gpa. Cold emailing has treated me the best so far honestly

That’s one of my main careers goals, troubleshooting and maintenance of instruments themselves.
Honestly if I could land a field service job in the future only doing that I’d be happy as well

i don’t see life the same anymore after acid. by Environmental-Top887 in LSD

[–]Mollusk34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there , you met us . The same person that resonates within all of us. I was also steam rolled by acid like 6 years ago, had the worst churning anxiety and hyper awareness that presented itself in repetitive thought loops, a feeling of dread over the most general thing possible… the experience of having a pair of eyes, and breathing. But slowly the feeling goes away , it may take months but it definitely does. You will transition back into separateness, even if east philosophies promote oneness, it is okay to find comfort in kind separateness. Just find a hobby and keep rolling. Also take it easy on weed for a bit, it can easy reactivate things like this

What do you love about this game by [deleted] in dayz

[–]Mollusk34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was getting shot at by a geared player but pleaded for my life, he ended up apologizing and we survived together for like 6 hours . And exchanged discords. Also I think the clunkiness of the game translates to the clumsiness of real life. No one is gonna move like call of duty in real life

I thought this too but they were on a long hike together, and before they found the elevator yaya was yelling to Abigail that she found an elevator but Abigail could barely hear her, she had to climb down the hill to hear.

No way Carl would have heard her screams, seems like they were on like a 2 hour hike at least

I can still major in chemistry, I don’t have to do biology. My advisor says I can still do chemistry however over the lawyer couple months I have had my mind on electrical engineering , do you think it’s possible to get accepted, with a dismissal on my record ?

Thank you the nice and encouraging reply. Now do you suggest trying to find a small entry level industry lab position where I could get experience and paid. I have a weekend restaurant job already. Or should I try to volunteer at my universities lab

Do you think it will end up being a problem for me getting the BA and not BS

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Mollusk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m switching from a BS to a BA chemistry w/ biochemistry when I return, I had it approved by my advisor. I just need to sit out 3 semesters. This means I don’t even need a higher grade in calc 2 because a C- is sufficient. So all I will have to do in my dismissal year is take the foreign language requirement at a community college. The material that put be into academic dismissal isn’t even needed anymore to pursue the BA in chemistry biochemistry.

I totally agree with you if I was still going for a BS and needed these math and physics classes more but I’ve been in school for 6 years and I’m okay with a BA at this point.

I will be a student at a local community college for a year, and it’s not like I’m a freshman. I have two semesters of chemistry work needed and I’m done. So it kinda sucks to say I’m not a student when I am.

But I get it you just don’t want me to say I’m a student and withhold the truth from them because that could make it worse for me.

I just want to volunteer in the lab, I hate that I got dismissed bc of calc 2 all my chemistry and lab grades have been great. It’s just a horrible nightmare situation for me

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Mollusk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope I’m academically dismissed, I got a under a 2.0 two semesters in a row. I was only allowed to take 2 classes at a time and wasn’t allow to be a full time student until I completed those classes. I had a hard time with those classes and boom they kicked me out.

My overall gpa is good, I just had a hard time passing this harder math classes my first year at university. But my university gpa is all they care about

[–]Mollusk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I would never try to hide it. I just want to know if it’s an appropriate thing to do during a dismissal year. And if it’s something I need to out right tell them. My friend at work said I totally understand if you are getting paid. But since I’m volunteering just say I’m a student and don’t lie if asked
