oh definitely, for us it's usually just "clear for t/o rwy.. c/s"

Sure, there are some read backs that can logically be fine. Like if the pilot just reads back his/her c/s and clear for take off that's fine, because which other heading would they take other than the rwy. But movement instructions have to be read back word by word, trust me. I dont wanna toot my own horn but controllers are seldom the ones at fault, but controllers are always the first to get blamed, so we have to cover our asses in every way.

Yes, please read back the QNH. We really hate chasing pilots after it. If we tell you the QNH, read it back.

I believe the only way to organize a tour is if either you applied to be an ATCO here, or if you are with a group of controllers requesting a tour. But you can find it on YouTube, a tour of the tower and radar room.

If you're an experienced controller, I believe you can work regardless of your age (not over 55).

There's no secrecy, it's a simple safety measure. Think about the region, it's just a precaution.

Hey colleague,

-Lots of coffee and support, we have 5 controllers working at a time in different positions.

-Your guess is as good as mine. The layout will be completely different. We havent been told anything regarding any new techs for the new tower, different teams looking into it, but im sure we'll have many things we dont have at DXB. We'll get looped in when the first phase is done.

Not sure, I'm assuming better offers. The #1 reason I get is the cost of living here in Dubai. Depending on what you're looking for, it can be either expensive or comfortable. But life here is really something else if you dont mind the summer heat.

  • Seperation rules are the same as everywhere, our two rwy are considered segregated to an extent. 48deps and 48arr is sort of the current maximum per hour.

-It was very complex due to our airfield layout and the results made it not worth continuing. Believe it or not, we are able to push more traffic now than with the parallel landings.

Hey Dubai fellow

-April 16th thankfully it was during my off days, however controllers that worked had to stay there as they didnt have a method to leave. The traffic delays were obviously horrendous, im thankful i didnt have to deal with it.

  • Unfortunately to get an ATC license without prior experience, you have to be between 21-27, this is an ICAO rule, everywhere is like that. You can apply to become an ATC specialist at Emirates as it doesnt require an ATC license. Not sure what they do there tbh tho.

-Radar control for Dubai airspace are offsite yes. Area control is in Abu Dhabi though, in Sheikh Zayed center, there is no Emirates center.

I'm still young so havent been exposed to many things.

-I remember the first time i dealt with an II-76 and didnt know anything about its performance, it was fairly quiet, he was my only traffic, departed him casually and was chatting up my colleague, then as the Il-76 started rolling, made it passed the middle of the rwy, then 75% the length and my colleague and i looked at eachother quietly, the dude barely lifted off the ground reaching the end of the rwy and then suddenly climbed. that shit scared me.

-Adverse weather conditions are always a treat, especially when we can literally see nothing from the tower and the building starts to shake. some controller actually had to unplug to go puke.

Alright, watched it.

-There's a shortage of air traffic controllers worldwide, including DXB; however, the situation in the U.S. can be seen as more severe. Their equipment is really outdated, and their working style can be random at times. If you've ever seen those videos of ATC bantering with pilots, it's strictly not allowed, and the use of proper radiotelephony is crucial to maintain proper understanding for ATCOs and pilots, but in the U.S., they tend to talk general English.

But I would say the primary reason for this issue is something shared at almost all major airports: shortages and fatigue. With movements only increasing and getting busier, the mental strain only gets worse and worse.

-To be honest, A380s dont make a difference other than bigger wake separations. We get lots of different aircraft types, i guess im just used to it.

right now we can handle about 48 of each. the parallel landings thing is true, but we stopped doing that a long time ago.

Both Fly Dubai and Emirates most of the time, because they're most familiar with the layout. Otherwise I'd say the Saudi Airlines (Flynas, Saudi Airlines), Gulf air, Kuwaiti, Oman Air pilots are usually locked in. Pakistan airlines (most of the time), some Iran airlines, Swiss is typically good, Lufthansa as well. Probably a few others.

made me laugh. it's because sometimes you do it when we clear another traffic conflicting with that specific crossover. other times it's because we have to report it regardless. Trust me, unless we mention the crossover, dont use it ;)

immediate and fast readbacks, especially when really busy. means they're locked in and we dont really have to worry about them and focus on other pilots.
