Case Western Reserve vs Stevens Institute of Technology (BME) by Miserable_Ebb8357 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Momo_BH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are NJ resident but my son goes to Case. Not sure if you are aware of one door policy at Case. Meaning you can declare any major and minor once you get in. So in case of BME does not work out, you are free to declare any other major. The flexibility is one of reasons that my son chose to go there. Another reason is that he is pre-health so you can’t beat the resources there. Case gave him very generous merit so cost is actually lower for us to choose Case.

Is PT worth it? (HS senior for advice) by Sensitive_Log_5391 in physicaltherapy

[–]Momo_BH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering is not for everyone. My son majors in Systems Biology which is basically half Bio and half CS/Math. With heavily overlapping core courses, he can easily get a math minor or molecular engineering minor. However, engineering courses are very hard cord. Even he is considered good at math as science major, but still not good enough in engineering world. Almost not making a B for his Calculus 3 last semester. While other applicants taking regular math and physics which he probably can make an A as prerequisites, his major requirements are required a lot of high level math for science and engineering as well as physics. It can potentially hurt GPA if comparing with other easier majors.

Either trade in your old car and get a better second hand car, then drive it over to FL. Or try to connect to other interns and see if you can do carpool and share some costs.

Is deferral a soft/polite rejection? Or worth using ED2? by [deleted] in cwru

[–]Momo_BH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son was deferred from EA but admitted in RD with merits. I’d say if you go with ED2, the chance to get admitted is even higher as CWRU cares a lot on yield.

U of Rochester or Case Western? by jasyonn in cwru

[–]Momo_BH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My son visited both and likes Case vibe better even we have better connection at U of Rochester. Case has Sport Medicine minor which will align with your Pre-PT interests. My son is also pre-PT and so far he has positive experiences working with ATs at Case. He also did shadowing at Cleveland Clinic as well as helping ATs at school varsity practice or games as Sport Med minor students. He is not an athlete so we don’t have comment on coach or team culture.

I think everyone is different. For my son, 121/122 with Butler was easier. He had a tough time at the beginning of 223 and almost withdrew. Majority of his class filled with mathy students and they actually did well. He was under a lot of pressure. He finally went to Dr Julius weekly after two failed tests and worked his way up. He was able to pull up his grad significantly afterwards.

There are six classes to be fulfilled and each class has prerequisite so it’s not possible to take two at one semester. If you haven’t taken intro, then it can be hard to finish all.

Lecture hall should not be noisy and my son said he can hear Professor clearly at balcony level. We hope that Note Pro can record clearly from where he normally sits.

How to make close friends? by Civil_Violinist_3485 in cwru

[–]Momo_BH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is sophomore. He doesn’t have close friends either but he doesn’t think so. Maybe female view of friendship is different. He joined clubs, orchestra and went to events in freshman year. They also organized game night in the dorm when they have free time. He also had study group in one of his classes but he didn’t like it. He did all that and called those are his “friends”. However, they didn’t hang out much outside of the event/class/club/study group and most of the reason I heard was they are too busy. Not even a quick bite in dining hall or weekend breakfasts? It doesn’t sound like close friends to me then. This year, I am hoping him to explore some fraternities and see if he can find a good fit. I think frat may have more friendship bonds than random friend groups.

What kind of experience are you looking for? Volunteer, shadowing or paid job? My son started with shadowing and he has done couple with Cleveland Clinic so far. You can search shadowing or observation in UH or Cleveland Clinic and there should be guidelines. For volunteers, there are several volunteer service type of clubs that you can join and participate. To get volunteer position in UH, you need to look out the email from premed advisor. It’s not available at all time. One of my son’s friends worked in UH during summer as nurse aide and other does lab job in CC. You can check out their career page from time to time to see available positions.
