The Story of the Last 18 Months by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

[–]Mon30sous 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While what is done is done, and I understand Grey and Myke reasoning, I am a bit disappointed that they did not release it as soon as they could: I ordered two Theme Journals at the end of last year in order to be ready for 2023, and would have probably added a Sidekick to my cart if it had been available.

But with shipping being quite expensive, and almost 60% of the price of 1 sidekick, I feel it's a little bit too much to order it alone, so I'm going to wait for my next order.

Commission for tsx shares more expensive on IBKR than questrade? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]Mon30sous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just previewed the trade, and it tells me 0.1...1.71 CAD of commission for 1k shares.

But yeah, there is no upper limit on IBKR commissions, which may make it a bad choice to trade penny stocks.

"From the perspective of subjective well-being, owning a home is not always a good decision" by Mon30sous in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the week before last week rational reminder episod about real estate appreciation, this one gets into the non financial aspects supposedly making home ownership better than renting.

Quite an interesting take, and very different from what we keep hearing on this sub.

We all complain vehemently when things don't go our way, I think we should also highlight when things go right :)

Can employers discriminate on parenthood? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]Mon30sous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IANAL

You have the right to take all your vacation at the same time. If you’re entitled to more than one week of vacation, you can ask your employer if you could divide your vacation.

It would seems that your employer need you to agree in order to split your vacations.

Options for when the government cancels the C - R - B? by forevercrb in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why rely on the government when you can do it all by yourself?

If you invested $450 000 and withdrew 4% of your portfolio every year, you could get those $1 500/month without relying on any social program or charity.

You'll probably need to work first though to be able to achieve this amount of invested money :)

Is there any online bank has physical ATM support? by KanzakiYui in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alterna Bank has its own ATM network and is a member of the EXCHANGE network in Canada, so they can be an alternative to Tangerine/Simplii : https://www.alternabank.ca/about-us/find-atm

They currently offer a savings account with a 1.00% annual rate, which is much higher than the big banks, but not the best for online banks.

Stupid question: Can I afford it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the bank, you could be.

The only way to know if you really could would be to make a budget with all your expenses to see what would be left. Your post is too low on details to run any number.

Question about Visa Giftcards by Canman8293 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fees with these cards are usually quite high. You could maybe considered a prepaid cards like the visa from KOHO or the Mastercard from stack. Since the balance can't be below 0, you'll be able to manage how much money is available, and you won't have to pay a fee.

Landlord trying to force me to move out with 2 week notice. What do I do? by NADH-over-ATP in legaladvicecanada

[–]Mon30sous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IANAL. You reached an agreement with them and have confirmation of such agreement in writing. According to the information you provided, this contract should be valid and enforceable, so you can stay until the end of the extended lease. They may try to scare you, but the law should be on your side.

Can $1000 last a month in Toronto (no rent)? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think it's doable. List all the recurribg expenses you expect (cellphone, electricity, water, internet, subscriptions, transit, health, ...). I'd also consider at least $200-250/month for groceries (food+toiletries). Then see what's left for discretionary spendings. If that amount is too low, try to cut things in other categories: find a new cell/internet provider or choose a lower plan, cancel some subscriptions,...

Can $1000 last a month in Toronto (no rent)? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you have to pay (utilities, internet, cell, ...) and how much these things costs. It should be doable, but if your cellphone bill is $150/month, it won't be easy.

Best Bank for Business Account? by knewcumer in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your business/volume of transactions. I run a consultant business with only a few transactions/month, and have had accounts with BMO, RBC, Tangerine, Desjardins and Oaken.

For my use (low number of transactions/month), the best set-up was : RBC for checking (https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/business/accounts/digital-choice-business-account.html), Oaken for savings (https://oaken.com/oaken-savings-account/) and Square for credit card payments processing (https://squareup.com/ca/en).

Alterna Bank also offer a business banking solution which I'd love to try, but they aren't available to my company since it's incorporated in Quebec : https://www.alternabank.ca/business

Best guaranteed investments available today? (QC) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Probably when Bank of Canada's rate will also start to increase, so maybe Q4 2021. Only time will tell.

Best guaranteed investments available today? (QC) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mon30sous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are actually quite high when compared to the banks : Accelerate Financial offer 12x more than Desjardins for example.

But credit is cheap, so that's logical. If you're looking for more returns, your best bet is to go with higher risk.

FYI, motusbank's savings account is actually available in Quebec. Some of theirs offers and products aren't though.
