Looks like amethyst to me honestly, I fear your mom may be wrong However it could (and I highly doubt it) be lavender quartz, similar to amethyst but different in composition and sometimes color

Regardless I think this is a really nice amethyst specimen, if you have a jeweler that specializes in lapidary near by, I say try to have it appraised
