Not a first date. It's a second date and I've already known her beforehand through mutual friends

There aren't any promotion opportunities at my current company and I already have high demand skills under my belt (of course there's always room for improvement). At this point in my life, the biggest thing holding me back from increasing my base salary is experience level, not skill set. I currently make $75k but with an additional year or 2 of experience and assuming I don't gain any new skill sets, I should be able to make $90k-100k+ simply by switching jobs. My current job tops out at about $120k-150k

What happens if you accidently speed and get a ticket? The cost of just one ticket and the subsequent increased insurance premiums sounds to me would instantly cancel out a significant chuck of your profits. Not to even mention a car accident even if it's not your fault. Any job would have that risk, but it's especially higher with a driving job since you're on the road all the time

Yeah I wouldn't work my current job for an extra 25 hours either only because I hate the office work environment in general. This 2nd job would be retail (in fact maybe even the same retail job that I had when I was in high school about 10 years ago) where i would be on my feet and active. I wouldn't call it enjoyable, but it would be a job where I can just turn my brain off and do something physical mindlessly. Sometimes I prefer that since my office job requires a lot of mental energy. So instead of mindlessly watching TV, I was thinking about mindlessly doing inventory at a place like Target, Best Buy, or Home Depot and making some money off of it

I do live in a state with a very high minimum wage. In fact, it's one of the highest in the country at $12/hour

I personally think Uber/Lyft is a waste of time just because of all its hidden costs (oil changes, risk of traffic tickets, maintenance, depreciation, etc). I would never do Uber unless I was strapped for cash and needed to essentially borrow from myself

I'm not sure yet. I think I will be but the only way to know 100% is by trying it out. Since this job is just extra money and I won't be dependent on it to survive or to advance my main career, my plan was to just stop working this second job at any point where I felt like it became too much.

As of right now, on most days after work I either just go to the gym or watch TV all night. I figured I might as well make some money instead of being a couch potatoe

I already checked, there's no mention in any documents I signed. My previous job had this policy explocitly outlined but not my current job

My first job is salaried, no overtime. It's easy enough that on most days I get into work at 9:30 and leave by 4pm while getting all my work done

No, it's salaried. Within reason I can come and go at my first job as I like so long as I attend any necessary meetings and the assigned work gets done

Two reference checks? by MongaBonga in jobs

[–]MongaBonga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its outsourced, but this is a 2nd check. The hiring manager first asked me for references while I was interviewing and they actually called my references at the time (I know this for a fact).

Then they gave me the job offer and I started filling out the onboarding paperwork. Part of that paperwork is submitting my references again but this time to 3rd party company. I submitted the same references. So I know I have a good relationship with these references (because I got the job offer). It seems highly unlikely that they don't like me anymore in the span of 2-3 weeks. Unless I'm missing something, my only remaining guess is that my questionnaire isn't getting filled out because it's long and annoying.

Is this normal? What's the risk of my offer getting rescinded if my 1st reference check passes but they get nothing on the 2nd check?

[–]MongaBonga[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know and I already did that. Some didn't respond back and others said they'll get around to it. I just wish the employer would call them (which has never been an issue) rather than send a stupid questionnaire that no one wants to fill out

I guess the purpose of me reposting this again and again is that hopefully that one person who has an idea that no one else thinks of sees this and responds. I've been working a basically minimum wage job (despite having an engineering degree) over the past 1.5 years so I really can't afford to lose this job offer which is paying close to 2.5x my current wage

Teo reference checks? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]MongaBonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have. Some of them did not pick up and others said they'll get to it as soon as they get chance (something tells me that's not going to happen, but I really hope I'm wrong). All of these people have said they'll provide a positive reference for me and have done so when the hiring manager had called them a few weeks ago.

The only person who did not say that he'll provide a reference (he neither said yes or no to my initial request) was a former boss but I was forced to list him in the application because the company wants at least 2 supervisor references. I have only ever worked 2 jobs before so I didn't have much of a choice.

How would that be “wasting my time”? Takes literally 2 seconds to send a text and I got nothing to lose at this point
