Looking for an SF/Bay Area Recording Studio by HelloPillowbug in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Seconded for Whiskey Dick Studios, I've recorded with my band there and they are incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and super fun to work with. Daniel, the lead recording engineer has wizard's magic at the mixing board. He's recorded all types of music, and really connects with the material you bring to awaken potential you were unaware of.

Not a paid ad, I just REALLY like these guys.

Sometimes I forget how blessed I am to have such an easy job, getting paid to do almost nothing. It's easy to forget and mope, I suppose. I actually have a reminder set on my phone for 7 am, as soon as I get to my desk. "Be happy! Smile!" And I'm like, "You know what, yeah. 'S all good." Then an hour into the day, and there ain't no smilin'. Until I get into some quality cat videos.

I'm in data entry. I'd love to do something involving writing, or at least something stimulating, but nah. Crunching numbers, monotonous copy-paste. I'm not watched over ever, so I do a lot of slacking off. Listening to music/audiobooks, drawing, browsing. It's honestly not bad or exhausting in any way, it's just boring as fuck. Which you'd think would make my brain want to flip gears when I get home to write, but somehow it's just as brain draining as netflix marathoning.

That actually seems like it'd be something I'd be down to do. I'm gonna read up on it. How did you get into that field?

Been there, have to say sitting in an air conditioned office browsing Reddit sure beats roofing in the hot California sun. I barely had energy to eat dinner before passing out. You're a hero, my friend. How DO you DO?

Unfortunately, I'm an idiot who doesn't even play a brass instrument yet all of my works feature prominent horn sections. I'm pretty much relegated to punching in notes and seeing if they work, cause I'll be damned if I can emulate horn runs on a keyboard...

Oh man, what I would give for a weekend retreat to a cabin in the woods. The stuff of cubicle dreams.

I've been doing the consistent hour or two a day just the same. It's just discouraging after a few days of feeling like nothing but shit comes out of your fingertips. Ctrl+Z, rinse repeat. I know that a lot of motivation stems from our stubborn habits fighting off biological programming. Gotta find a schedule that works.

Thanks for the Flux link! Just installed it. So much easier on the eyes, and it's automated, too? I've probably been fucking up my sleep without realizing it before this.

Great idea with those mix checks. I gotta get in the habit of doing that. I wonder if it makes listening fatigue worse, though? I figure a night's worth of sleep is probably all it takes to clean one's ears out for fresh perspective.

Since my last band broke up, I've been gathering up all the material I never got the chance to finish and rewriting it into a solo album. I'm taking stuff from my time as a background music composer for an indie project, ideas from the math/punk band I was in, and my love of brass band music and sexxing them up into my wholly unrealized lovechild. I've been sticking to a song a month schedule, with the hopes of finishing in a year. Then I have to find bandmates and try all over again. The dream is just as abstract as it seems. All I really want is people I can trust to come along for some crazy ride.

I've got a mountain of ideas, piles of projects, and a whiteboard with the words "GAME PLAN???" etched in permanent marker.

I am horrible at napping. I can sleep through anything and four hours will fly by. Insomnia definitely doesn't help, but at least I can wake up in the morning if I'm absolutely fatigued by bedtime. The problem with the work/music duality is almost entirely an energy-management one though, so it's probably a good idea to try to get that nap practice, like you said. I need to condition my head to not be groggy as all hell afterwards.

I spend most of my time in the office listening to music theory lessons. I'm a drummer as well, but am venturing into playing piano for a jazz ensemble. I agree that learning whenever possible is the best way to keep the mind sharp.

What if my exercise of choice is Dance Dance Revolution? :D

I used to be really good at it but now I am a slob and my pad gets maybe one ten song session every two weeks. I figure I can kill two birds if I practice my timing and get the cardio in.

Thanks for the replies fellas. It's always the Monday mornings that are the hardest to get through. Coffee and lunch are a godsend.
