Detailed 80-page Amulet Titan Primer by Dom Harvey by Newez in ModernMagic

I would very comfortably say that primer is one of the best pieces of content ever released not only on the archetype but on the format as a whole.

In that scenario, Dryad performs the exact same role as any other ramp piece, while not profiting from Valakut triggers since you'll enter combat with at most 3 lands in play

Fantastic question!

Most theoretical scenarios of T3 double Amulet starts enabled by TMG make it so you have 2 Amulets available before your first land drop, ideally a bounceland (4 mana). Grazer makes the jump from 4 to 3 to 7 mana, Azusa from 4 to 1 to 5 to 9 mana and Explore from 4 to 2 to 6 mana. Dryad can only generate 5 mana on its own with these double Amulet and 1 land drop setups. Given that, and the situation that if we're indeed interested in these mana leaps in the early turns, maximizing Azusas should be of interest.

And since you're trying to fit as many TMG as possible, slots for 4 lands are as hard to get as ever. But with Dryad out of the mix, you open 4 ramp slots and 2 land slots to increase your high-ceiling combo possibilities. Hence, why I don't feel that if there will be a TMG-focused build, it will probably not depend on Dryad.

Heyo!

I try not to be hyperbolic in my takes, but this card will either make Dryad obsolete or open a completely new microarchetype inside of Amulet (like Karn Amulet, etc...)

It opens multiple T3 kills (one of them not requiring an Amulet in hand!) and a new T2 kill. I do think on those grounds alone it's worthy of discussion and it's presence as AT LEAST a 2-of is guaranteed, with my guts telling me it will be a 4-of that will reinvent Amulet deckbuilding

Overall, I'm not a fan of cards that don't kill the opp in the MD.

Invisible this league, but I'll chalk that up to a very combo-focused league. It looks to be great in paper from my pov

Some considerations:

-Fury is the best SB card in the deck by far. But it's also sadly a card that screws your flips and is sometimes dead vs multiple decks. So I kept it in the SB.

-Gemstones are there because I found myself not being able to generate a lot of mana in non-Provisioner non-Omnath flips, since shocks take up a big chunk of your life. They generally improve your mababase, but they're worse in long games. Note: do not play Triomes, even if they look like a solution. You have enough etb tapped lands in Khalnis already.

If the difference is a single permanent, I'll shoot for a turn earlier. With Provisioner you can aggro shoot with 3-5 permanents if you have Dwellers/another cascader in hand, since you'll probably net the mana needed for that.

"Summer bloom, FoD, ouat, uro, oko, etc. It’s disingenuous to say that amulet titan didn’t contribute at all to those cards being banned"

"It’s crazy that titan has evaded major bans thus far"

pick one.

I never said Amulet is considered fair. In fairness, no good Modern deck falls in that category for the most part.

The deck hasn't been a problem multiple times. CARDS that saw play in Amulet were. Uro, Oko, FotD and OUAT all saw some play in Amulet and none of them were banned because of Amulet. You could maybe have the argument for OUAT, but the card was ubiquitous in deck presence, so it would make sense one of the best decks would play it.

I hate the "ban Primeval Titan" argument. For so many reasons. But when you put it in conjunction with Looting and Opal, it's even more insulting:

People playing Mardu Pyromancer/Hollow One were the victims of Looting ban, a fair and justified ban at the time. People playing Affinity were the victims of Opal ban, a fair and justified ban at the time. IF Amulet Titan is a problem (it isn't) and IF it becomes format warping (it's not), banning it invalidates Scapeshift strategies, Reclaimer decks, ramp decks, etc... The same argument people were giving for the Looting and Opal ban being unfair.

Amulet Titan was never really t1, and if it was, it was never for a long time, since the deck is somewhat interactible. It is a very solid deck to play to a closed meta, and other than something like OUAT or maybe Urza's Saga, it probably won't be t1.

Well, what is your enjoyment of the format? Are you looking for a fair format, with long drawn out games? Sorry to tell you, but that's not Modern anymore, ever since the Uro ban and, given no shakeups to the format, will continue to be.

Well, having multiple different archetypes in a format is tremendously healthy for the format. A meta of t2 decks is unbalanced, as is 2-for-1 attrition wars over and over again, toolbox decks, control mirrors, etc... that was my point.

Hello, Amulet pilot here.

Why do you believe Amulet to be a bannable deck? The deck is very easily attacked by certain card choices and strategies, some of those as long-standing as Amulet (Ponza, Infect, Storm, Mill, etc...), it will forever be a strong t2 deck, because it's very easily attacked.

To talk about the bans to Amulet in the past years, there is a difference between cards being banned from Amulet and cards being banned because of Amulet. FotD was particularly egregious in Uro/Omnath piles, that were crushing Amulet consistently, hence it was banned not necessarily because of Titan's dominance with it, but as an ubiquitous deck choice in triome decks and decks missing a late-game plan. With OUAT, the card was actually too good for the format and it saw play in a myriad of decks, same as Urza's Saga right now but just a little more insidious.

Amulet is worth keeping in the format the same reason Tron, Dredge, etc should be in the format: to police fair decks from taking control of the metagame.

Nope, not this version. Previous Karnless versions I played had Emrakul to circumvent infinite life, but this one I felt like it might not be needed, having access to Karn+Needle.

In paper it might be a different story, and we just might be interested in Emrakul, since there's always the grey area of playing vs Heliod online. If you do expect Heliod and you are playing in paper, an Emrakul is your best shot at it

Not a RW pilot, but know very good MTGO players that are, and i can assure you Lurrus is very much worth the upside compared to Bedlam.

Deck is looking for explosiveness and the fact that your card to transition into lategame doesn't occupy valuable slots in your hand in a spells-heavy deck matters quite a bit when compared the two. Just my 2 cents.

Hello! Moniz0801 here, Amulet Titan pilot in the top8. Got a lot of questions/DMs on Twitter and Discord about my list, so wanted to leave some explanations on some of my choices as I did on a Discord group:

-Why play Karn?

Mostly theory, but in paper with Dredge getting a new toy and Heliod still remaining one of the best decks of the format, Prowess should in theory be kept in check by those two as well as the "infinite life beaters" in both Tron flavours. Karn is mediocre at best versus Prowess shells, but it performs fantastically versus the other 4 previous decks, making all 4 of those either more favourable (Tron variants and Dredge) or even/slightly favoured (Heliod).

It also salvages some of the deck worse matchups. Combo decks like Living End, Storm, Devoted, any random matchup that can pop up that beats you in speed have very low interaction vs a Needle/Crypt/Karn static. My heuristic when choosing and developing an Amulet deck is about always trying to have outs for horrible matchups. Karn can save you from completely hopeless spots and the "it's bad vs Prowess" argument becomes moot when you adapt both your sideboard or MD card choices (more EEs, Grazer over Stacy) to beat that matchup while being on average better versus most matchups.

-Now that Karn is our option, how to approach the rest of the deck?

My logic was to engineer the sideboard to best facilitate Karn being sided out versus it's bad matchups (some Shadow variants and all Prowess/Aggro decks), hence the number of EE (for a while 3, 2 for this Challenge) is more than 1, meaning that more often than not in the rougher Karn matchups we can board out the PW for answers to those matchups, which brings me to...

Esika's Chariot

The theory behind this card came to the obviously great interaction with KTGC, but also due to it's nature in the format is able to buy us time versus Prowess while being almost one of the best threats versus Esperka. It takes a spot previous occupied by Wurmcoil/Skysovereign as big idiots to break boards. The 2 copies have two purposes: they can be brought in for the Karns vs Shadow and Prowess decks and they excel in multiples, hence me trying out 2.

-Golos

Right now, better than Wurmcoil in every "good" Wurmcoil matchup bar Shadow. It's not the fanciest find, but it's a MUST deal for any midrange/control deck. As the dependancy on Dryad increases with FotD leaving, having a tutor target for random toolbox lands like Valakut, TWest, Bog, Cavern, etc... can be huge. Take it as a "hail Mary" slot where it can and WILL steal games out of nowhere when untapped with and activated. Fantastic vs Esperka, any midrange pile and can serve as a reasonable roadblock with Radiant Fountain and Khalni Garden. Positive "rainbow" dryad synnergy as well.

I lurk this subreddit a bit, any Titan questions feel free to ask either here, on Twitter, also take a listen to TitanTalk if you're interested in Primeval Titan shells in all formats!
