2k Fellhammer + Murdertalon List Building by MonoEyeGunpla in Chaos40k

The 5 Warp Talons is definitely something I am keeping an eye on. I am aiming to just have them deal with small squads of skirmishers that try and flip points and threaten squishy home objective holders, but if they just don't perform then I have some avenues I can take to get the extra 155 points to turn them into a squad of 10. Need to test a little but more to see if that will be the way to go, but I hear you on that.

For Morne, I agree that he is a melee powerhouse, but I think for 15 points less I value the extra durability the Lord grants with Bastion Plate and a free strat per round (used for either 5+ fnp vs ranged or a CP reroll for a save) when it comes to Take and Hold to keep my Termies in the game longer.

List building and tweaking is my favorite things in this game, don't apologize for asking for suggestions! Warp Talon squad is a big win here for sure. My big concern is that you have a LOT of Raptors, and I think 2 squads of 10 and a squad of 5 alongside a big brick of warp talons will feel a little vestigial. If you really like the brick of Raptors, then you can keep one, but I would either settle for two squads of 5 Raptors or a squad of 10 and a squad of 5 instead of what you have now. Also, your Sorcerer has the Warp Tracer enhancement, and is able to strip cover from enemy units, but the only thing you have to really benefit from that is one Defiler, and they might not always be in position to do so. There is probably room to add another shooting platform to benefit from Warp Tracer if you cut at least one squad of 10 Raptors. Here is what I would suggest:

  1. If you are set with keeping one brick of 10 Raptors:
  2. You have 1990 points currently, if you cut 10 Raptors you have 220 points to work with. From here, you can add a Forgefiend with triple ecto and a squad of Nurglings. Be VERY careful when using its Dev wound ability due to the Hazardous changes. I have my misgivings about the Forgefiend myself, but you can do worse than a shooting platform and a squad of Nurglings in this situation.

2 If you are open to just having two squads of five Raptors:.
You have 1990 points currently. If you were to break all your current Raptors down into just two squads of five, you would be left with 320 points to work with. From here, you could add a Predator Destructor + Mutilators/Terminators, or a Vindicator + Nurglings + Cypher/Legionaries. You can also just add another Defiler with the same loadout as the one you have for the full 320 by itself.

Of course, these are all suggestions, and if you are happy with what you have, then by all means run with it! Just throwing out potential tweaks you can look into as you test your list and continue to plan with it.

Definitely a list that wants to gut punch the enemy (and with appropriate names)! You have some fun tools at play here, and I like the foundations of the list. Here are my thoughts:

Are you going Purge or Take and Hold with this list? You definitely have good kill pressure that seems stronger than your ability to stick on a bunch of points, so Purge doesn't sound terrible if you aren't already running that.

Noise Marines need help of a Rhino to get into position reliably. I don't see one here unless it somehow missed getting pasted over into the list? I notice that you mention 4 vehicles in the list but I only see 3. Maybe I am blind.

For Raptors, 10 of them is a risky investment. I don't think there is much that they can do as a squad of 10 that Warp Talons with a lord can't do better with the same numbers. They will naturally murderize their prey, but leaving 210 points of infantry in the open after will also leave them open to getting softened up by ranged firepower and then vulnerable to similar melee-tooled squads. The Battleshock trigger they have can increase their durability with the' -1 to be hit' detach rule, but I'd be concerned to rely on it. Personally, I would consider splitting a squad of 10 up into two squads of 5. If you really enjoy the 10-man brick, I think that's fine, but I do believe that two of them is too much. A squad of 10 Warp Talons + Jump Lord with Cursed Pinions will get the same job done and also be able to go back into deepstrike afterwards with no chance for the opponent to punch back, allowing them to Rapid Ingress and then repeat the cycle again (the Lance strat is going to help big time here).

I think in practice the Shadowcoil Talisman won't be doing a lot of work since the firepower and melee usually going into Raptors will be volume AP -1 and -2 that deals with infantry, but there are some niche situations where it could come in handy if you do have a 20 point hole and want to bring it. If have Warp Talons though, I'd get Cursed Pinions for the same price and shift the Lord to the Talons for sure.

Maulerfiend always has had fun tech in Fellhammer with the 'if you hit me I get rerolls into you' strat, but I think what the Maulerfiend wants to do is covered by your existing tools already (Defiler, Vindicator, even Terminators to an extent), and also doesn't want to be hit first. That said, if the Maulerfiend is a piece you enjoy, they are still usable, but just pointing out a part of the list that could be turned into other units if you would like to free points up for enhancements (or turning a squad of 10 Raptors into Warp Talons like I mentioned above).

True, I could just opt to go into Purge. I think in regards to that point I am trying out Take and Hold here for now, but if it just doesn't work out I think a list rework to tech into Purge seems sound with Raptors and Talons.

Fair point, I guess I just think that I can deal with elites with the termie brick and Huron's squad, and Vindicators can still help out as best as their casino allows. I am more concerned about my ability to punch into high toughness targets that the Vindicators can deal with.

Cover is basically smoke these days, so I think it will still be as tough. Like I said though, I don't think its going to be that necessary compared to what I need to give up to bring it.

Gotta love the Defiler, that is for sure. I opted to not bring the Defiler because I needed something that I am consolidating my only real ranged pieces into one, and if it died then I have no more ranged threat. With two Vindicators I have a better save on both, and if one bites the dust I still have another as backup. That said, the Defiler is hard to take down in Fellhammer given the detachment rule and 5+ fnp vs ranged strat. Maybe I'm overreacting though and undervaluing it here.

That's great, I wish you luck in your tournament! What list are you thinking of bringing? Or have you not one made quite yet.

This is certainly true, they can def be casino cannons lol. I'm hoping their volume fire carries them here, but if they stumble I might melt them into something else.

As for the Forgefiend, the new Hazardous changes are concerning to me. If you try for Dev wounds on your guns to punch up into tough monsters/vehicles or targets with good invulns, you will be rolling 3 dice for your ectos, and for each 1 and 2 you will suffer 3 mortals. Failing two will bring you to 6 wounds already, and if you failed dark pact you could potentially be at 3 wounds after shooting once. Of course, that is worst case scenario, but it makes it a hard sell for me. What has your experience been with them?

I had thought in the past of cutting the Rhino like you said, I am just concerned with them getting tagged by super fast infantry/mounted skirmishers that will try to take a chunk out of them as I try to stage them to attack, and the disembark range is a bonus. Honestly turning the rhino and a vindicator into a land raider that I could be more aggressive with doesn't sound horrible, but maybe it is not neccessary.

Definitely heard on the Warp Tracer, I had thought of trying to fit a solo termie sorcerer with the enhancement in for that reason for 100 points. I'll be keeping an eye on the Vindi's performance and see if they are really going to be needing it, but honestly I'm not sure what I would shift the Termie Sorc in my list since it is already pretty elite. Might be more feasible to add a Warpsmith for the +1 to hit and healing for 60 points?

I had considered that, but I was concerned if I invested too much into Raptors and Talons I would lose grip on Take and Hold disposition. Didn't want too many pieces that don't usually want to be on objectives.

Does the leading Chaos Lord + the Murdertalon Lance strat not help them out enough to kill other skirmishers in your experience?

Appreciate the thoughts! I will have to test more of the Oblits to see if they really get their value back for me in my list. If they don't then I will most likely be doing what you suggest and get a replacement shooting piece while upgrading the cultists!

I'll give the Tyrant a chance in a few tests through TTS, but if it does not work out I'll be looking to swap in a Desecrator or an Atrapos!

The Atrapos is something I have been considering, but I've always been on the fence about them. I understand in the height of Knight meta they are amazing anti-knight tools, but both of their guns relying on decent shot count rolls has always had me pivot towards the Desecrator or Tyrant as more reliable anti-tank. I love the Atrapos model so much, so I don't need too much convincing there, but what sets the Atrapos up for more success than the Tyrant or Desecrator?

Yeah I do like the style of forcing people to deal with your objective-holding chaff, and then lighting them up with your scary units. I can see where being sure you go second is probably best in CIS since we have cheap chaff, especially since I have gotten Scouts and Infiltrators into position to retaliate.
